Embarking on a journey with ten of my closest Yemeni friends, we ventured out to explore the serene allure of Tangyu Hot Spring Bishui Bay, a gem nestled 42 kilometers away from the bustling life of Xi'an, China. Our adventure began early in the morning, splitting into three taxis for the roughly 58-minute drive to the heart of Tangyu town. Our anticipation grew with every kilometer, eager to immerse ourselves in the ancient bathing culture that awaited us.
Arriving at 10:30 am, we made our way directly to Hot Spring Bishui Bay, where we eagerly reserved our tickets for a modest 45 yuan each. What unfolded over the next seven hours was an extraordinary journey through eight different ancient bathing pools, each offering a unique embrace of warmth and healing that seemed to transcend time itself.
Our experience at Tangyu Hot Spring in Bishui Bay was not just a visit; it was a pilgrimage to one of the best hot springs around Xi'an. Nestled in Lantian County, this hot spring has a storied past, once serving as a royal bathing site and marking the origin of China’s bathing culture. Known historically as Shimen Hot Springs, its use dates back to the Han Dynasty, evolving through the ages, especially during the Tang Dynasty, when Emperor Xuanzong expanded it into a sprawling courtyard of thermal bliss.
The waters, averaging a temperature of 58°C (136°F), are not only a testament to nature's warmth but also to its healing virtues, rich in minerals beneficial for skin and muscle ailments. Dubbed the "Water of Virtue" and "Mysterious Water," it's hailed as the "No.1 Hot Springs in the World," a place where the value of the peach blossom water, visible while bathing during spring, was said to surpass that of gold.
Spanning over 40,000 square meters, Tangyu Hot Springs stands as the largest open-air hot spring in northwest China, capable of welcoming 10,000 visitors daily. From the segregated men’s and Women’s Baths to the therapeutic Liyu Bath and the opulent Baths of Five Blessings, each pool offers a gradual decrease in temperature, catering to every visitor's preference. The remnants of the Tang Dynasty's influence are palpable in the five ancient pools, connected by cascading waterfalls, culminating in the Zhuoying pool, a spectacle of natural beauty and architectural marvel.
After our immersive experience in the thermal waters, we retreated to our hotel in the town, eager to indulge in cooking Arabian cuisine and explore the nocturnal charm of Tangyu. The following day promised another adventure, climbing the Bi Shui Wan mountain, a tale for another time.
Tangyu Hot Spring Bishui Bay is more than a destination; it's a journey back in time, a sanctuary where the modern world fades away, leaving only the warmth of the waters and the echoes of history. Whether lounging in the ancient baths, enjoying a sauna with a cup of coffee brewed with hot spring water, or exploring the vibrant life of the town, it's a place where worries dissolve and the spirit rejuvenates.
Our two-day sojourn in Tangyu was a testament to the enduring charm of nature's gifts and the rich tapestry of China's history. It was an experience etched in our memories, a reminder of the timeless beauty and healing power of Tangyu Hot Spring Bishui Bay, a treasure waiting to be rediscovered with every visit.
