“Star-only-ratings” would prevent a lot of confusion.

There is a slight difference between Captions text and Updates. The Updates are the super set of Captions as explained in my post. The excerpt of my post in this regard is pasted below:
It (Caption) is more about number of contributions with the text using Explore/Updates tab and not the number of photos/videos in one single update. With or without text, it is counted under Photo Updates in the profile but it gets counted under Captions only when the text for a single contribution is provided.

@MortenCopenhagen while the term “customer” sounds it bit funny when it is neither restaurant nor store, but rather a point of interest, such as a church for example 
, but we should stick with the terms which are actually shown.

Yes @WilfriedB , it is left at LG’s discretion as what need to be put under Updates. But by and large it refers to any special changes/views/events etc. related to that place.

Updates from customers appears on the desktop not on Android phone. It is just Updates which further sub-divided into ‘By owner’ and ‘By visitors’

What do you mean by Photo Updates? There is no such thing mentioned in the contribution stats.

Do you agree that this would be helpful? It would solve @WilfriedB concern mentioned above.
I like it better than Updates from customers.

Photo updates with Photo updates count is available under ‘Other contributions’ section. Below is the screenshot of Photo updates. This is available for Android phone, for Desktop not available and not very sure about iOS.

As of now Captions count and Photo updates count are considered separately for every contribution for Photos/Videos added through Explore/Updates tab.
Here is the clarification:

With the description in the text box displaying the help text as ‘Say something about your photos (optional)’ - It gets counted for both Captions and Photo updates

Without the description in the text box displaying the help text as ‘Say something about your photos (optional)’ - It gets counted only for Photo updates

@Kumaarsantosh @MortenCopenhagen this feels like we need a better clarification from the Google team, instead of us trying to figure out the framing of this thing.
@DeniGu could you help to provide more info on this and perhaps help explain the differences between a photo/video caption and an update/post caption (if I’m understanding it correctly myself! 
)?

Sorry, if you find my many questions annoying, but this is new territory for all of us, and I’m sorry, but your post has so far not brought complete clarity. I believe I’m not the only one who has trouble understanding all the details.
If you want, I would love to collaborate with you to amp up the clarity.
Please let me know how you in broad terms reached your conclusions. Is your post based on experiments and testing only, or did you also find some help pages or other documentation from Google? Eighter is good.
My help could include editing text, suggesting relevant screenshots, adding a text box with definitions, and fact-checking.

Deni, maybe the most urgent clarification we need is whether the new Captions on the Contribution stats are expected to remain or if it is just a test that could disappear any day. In the latter case, we don’t need to waste time on this.

For a test, I separately added two photos, each with caption. It turned out, in the Overview for the place on the desktop, you see only one photo and caption below the title ‘Updates from customer’:
However, when I click on this image, I see both photos, each with a caption, but no additional photos for that place. Unfortunately, I used the same caption for both. I wonder if some one else enters ‘Updates from customers’ for the same place in future, the most recent might appear at the overview and clicking on it shows all previous …?

I think it makes sense that not all updates show up on the place sheet.

Images added via explore tab appear as updates. Do you think that adding a image using this method will exclude it from becoming the featured photo? I haven’t been able to tell if update images also appear in the main gallery.

In my experience photos uploaded with an update often will eventually also show up among the other photos uploaded directly or with reviews. But not always. I gave not been able to figure out what triggers this.
More things to test.

Update: Ups I forgot to address your question. I keep pretty good track of how my photos are doing, but I have only uploaded a small amount of photos as updates, so my sample is too small to draw any conclusions. But I don’t remember seeing an update pics become the cover photo so far.

Good point @Rednewt74 . I did add a new place yesterday, added a picture and caption via explore tab and then wrote a review with two other pictures. Until now, the place does not have any featured photo.

Yes - this post is based on my experience and testing I performed. The facts are pure to the truth basis user experience. I did not find any help page or documentation so far.
The post is limited to the new Captions category added to LG profile only and so the related details are captured in FAQs form. We can always work together to improve it furthermore.
Like you, I am also curious to know additional details as you requested to GM.
