@JanVanHaver You know… once I start looking into this stuff, I quickly get either overwhelmed or frustrated! hahahahaha…
I started to look for the removed categories and when I was searching for “Budget Hotel”, I found a hotel categorized as “Indoor Lodging” - WHAT? How is this different from a hotel!!! …and it’s a valid category! It has all the details of a hotel. It looks like a hotel, acts like a hotel, it must be a hotel!!!
@JanVanHaver I’m seeing lots of interesting hotel category types. Do you have a complete list of valid and removed hotel categories? Thanks in advance.
That’s weird indeed @makky , thx for tagging me. There are 2 specific types of ‘Imbiss’ available (Kebab and Chicken), but not the general one that definitely used to be there. As more general category ‘Fast-Food-Restaurant’ is still available in German though.
We’ve seen quite a few changes in the food-related categories, so perhaps this is a temporary situation - I will keep monitoring for sure what happens there.
“Fast-Food-Restaurant” has a negative connotation in German, it’s mainly used for the american chains, so it’s actually not matching for a snackbar or a take-away
Btw there is another funny category called “Restaurant mit Essen zum Mitnehmen” which would fit too, but there is no word like this in our language(I wonder what the English equivalent is… “meal takeaway”? like listed at Pleper)
@makky I was referring to the fact that quite a few of those categories get added for quite a while now. Check out this overview post to find links to all of the separate posts from the past years:
@JanVanHaver ok… so there are many more special restaurants to choose, but I think they should keep the “plain types” of the categories, i.e. “hotel” “restaurant” “shop” etc.
Are there really only “Kebab shops” and “Chicken shops” ?? what about the vegetarian ones?? first of all the Falafel shops ??? what about the Gyros shops and the countless Asian snack bars?? they ignore them all…
btw there is one more weak translation into German: we say “Dönerimbiss” and not “Kebabimbiss”
I refer to my posting above where I stated that there is “snack-bar” missing, in German “Imbiss”.
Now half a year later, this is still a fact so I’d like to ask you if there is a need of taking action.
Btw I noticed, too, that there are pretty odd translation for these ones:
English
German on Maps
better German
chinese takeaway
Chinesisches Abholrestaurant
Chinesischer Imbiss
meal takeaway
Restaurant mit Essen zum Mitnehmen
?? (would make sense without “restaurant” … but still don’t get the concept of this category…)
sushi takeaway
Sushi Takeaway
Sushi Imbiss
… and finally “kebab shop” needs to be translated as “Dönerimbiss”, as explained here
I also see a need to reconsider “doner kebab restaurant” because there is no such one, but “kebab restaurant” (i.e. Turkish Grill Restaurant), they exist a lot and are really great to visit btw
