Location: Cary, North Carolina, USA
My Story
When I first started sharing my photography, I never intended to become a Local Guide. Photography has been my passion for almost 40 years, and I’ve always sought platforms to share my work. Over the years, I moved from logistical photo albums (which disappeared about 30 years ago) to PBASE, flickr.com, and eventually Blogger.com. While I enjoyed sharing my thoughts and images, I was often frustrated when my writings were inexplicably deleted. That’s what led me to Google Maps.
Google Maps felt like a stable platform to share my photography, but even here, I faced challenges. My carefully crafted 360-degree panoramic photos were sometimes ignored or rejected, especially after the Street View app was discontinued. Despite this, my passion for panoramic photography hasn’t wavered. I find joy in capturing the essence of new places and moments, even as the world moves on to easier methods like drones.
What I Love About Exploring
I love walking and traveling to distant places, always with my camera in hand. For me, photography is about recording history. I use HDR panoramic photography to capture the intricate details of the world around me. Life is so short, but the places we record can last far beyond our time. Places I’ve captured might disappear or change with time, but I hope my photos will serve as a window into the past for people 50 or even 100 years from now.
I value the effort it takes to create something original. While some enjoy sharing food photos or editing others’ work, I find fulfillment in capturing new places myself. The process—taking the photos, stitching them together, and creating something unique—is what I truly love.
A Day in My Life
On some days, I can take thousands of 360° panoramic photos. Each one is the result of stitching together multiple shots—sometimes as many as 64 photos for a single image. What makes my work unique is that I use a handheld DSLR instead of relying on tripods or monopods. This technique took years of practice, moving through frustration to mastery, and I know only a handful of people worldwide who can do the same.
Fun Fact About Me
One of my most memorable setups was with a Sony A6000, a Rokinon 8mm lens, and a Nodal Ninja Travel Pole. It was a bulky combination, especially compared to the convenience of drones today. But holding a camera in my hand gives me a sense of security and accomplishment that can’t be replicated.
My Vision for the Future
I hope that my work will help future generations understand the world as it was in our time. Places change, life moves on, and what we know today can easily be forgotten. Through my photos, I want to preserve the beauty and history of the places I visit, ensuring they are not lost to time.
As a Local Guide, I’m grateful for the opportunity to share my perspective with others. Photography isn’t just a hobby for me—it’s a way to document the world, one panoramic view at a time.
