A Google User assigned to photos , glitch

A Google User

This is specific to the Google Maps App, see if this happens for you also.

If you use the Explore button:

Find any update that is a Review, tap on that to load the review.
If I tap on any image in that review then it always shows A Google User:

If I go to the same image via the Review directly from the POI, then it’s correctly labeled.

It’s not just my app that does this?

Google User stealin those photo views : p

@Steve_UK always do post (hyperlink ) the POI you are referring to so that others can see, observe and compare the outcomes. :+1:t2:

Good morning Steven.
Seems to be the same what @Annaelisa reported yesterday …?

@WilfriedB i thought so too but in annaelisa case it no where said a Google user :fearful: it was someone else steal or posting from weird account.

No @Trail_blazer, “stolen” was a very first, but wrong guess. Later it turned out, depending on how you open the photo on the mobile app, the author’s name appears or does not appear. When you see “a Google user” also means, the name of the author is hidden.

This is indeed interesting @Steve_UK . And you are right, as I was able to replicate it by following your steps.

But in fact we are talking about two different things:

  • In @Annaelisa report, when you watch a photo from the main page of a listing if the photo is captioned the name of the contributor is not shown
  • in this report, if you open a review from the explore section of the app, and the review has one or more photos attached, on the photos the attribution will be to a Google User (while if you scroll up to the header of the review, the username of the contributor is correctly shown.

I wonder if both are glitches, maybe connected to eachother, or of it’s an intentional change by Google Maps.
For this reason I am tagging @DeniGu also here, to raise the potential issue to the team.

The issue is only on displaying the username of the contributor, @Trail_blazer .
If you try to replicate what @Steve_UK described you will see that very clearly

In addition, @WilfriedB , @Steve_UK , @Trail_blazer , if you open the photo and tap on “Google user” it will opens the correct profile of the person who added the photo

Thanks @ErmesT that’s why I asked for the link of POI so that I can see it myself. Though I did read your interesting discussion about annaelisa’s post. In hindsight i thought maybe it has to do with private profiles but I can’t conclude much as I didn’t come across it on maps.

Providing a link to the poi or the review will be completely useless, @Trail_blazer , because this issue is apparently visible only if you start from the explore section of the App.
It’s not related to a specific place, but only to the way you use to access that review.
You can try by exploring places around you too, till you find a photo with the review displayed on the bottom. Just tap on that review and you will see

Thank @ErmesT that clears evrything for me :+1:t2:
It’s all like that for me as well.

Every post with Review+Photo shows A google User. While taping on it, it shows a normal LG profile.
While all photos, videos without a review visible with the Lg’s name.

@Trail_blazer @WilfriedB @ErmesT

Appreciate the replies and looking at this one.
Screen record will be clearer next time, i forgot about that!

This is what reminded me of this issue, but didn’t want to hijack Annaelisa’s thread :+1:

Yep you got it. I was going to include the POI and then I would have to explain the area and get someone to start trying to use the Explore in the same area etc … :sob:

Certainly similar, they are kinda really specific issues that I’m sure hardly anyone would notice these or if they occured at the same time.
Spotted and reported via the app a month or 2 ago but the other thread reminded me so I thought I’d post here and see if others see the same :+1:
Thanks for escalating the issue.

Hi @Steve_UK, @ErmesT and everyone,

I wanted to confirm that this has been forwarded to our responsible team to look into. Thank you for sharing what you found!

Thanks for pointing this out, @Steve_UK! I noticed something similar on my Maps profile — when I viewed review photos posted by others, some of the photos showed ‘A Google User’ instead of the actual contributor. Interestingly, in some photos the correct review appears, but not in all. It does seem like a glitch. Glad to know that DeniG has already flagged this to the concerned team — hoping it gets fixed soon!

Hi again @Steve_UK, @ErmesT and everyone,

This issue should be fixed in the new version of the Google Maps app. That version may not be available yet everywhere, so please check again in a week. Thank you!
