Accelerate Message Composing in the New Connect

The new Connect platform provides a powerful text editor.
Most commands have a keyboard shortcut for accelerated composing.

The same set of tools is available:

  1. When posting a new article, or
  2. Replying to posts, or
  3. Composing a private message.

This is a significant advantage.

This article lists and describes keyboard shortcuts that accelerate composing messages on the new Connect platform.

Notes:

  1. Keep the Preview window open to see the formatting in real time.
  2. I have tested these techniques using a physical keyboard attached to a desktop computer.
  3. These techniques are not tested with a touchscreen device.

Tip 1

Select some text and:
Press Ctrl+B for Bold
Press Ctrl+I for Italics
Press Ctrl+B and then Ctrl+I for bold and Italic text.

Also, enclosing the words manually with:

  • a single * will make it italics,
  • two ** will make it bold,
  • three *** will make it both bold and italics.

Tip 2

With no text selected, press Ctrl+B to turn the Bold mode ON.
The editor will show some dummy text like strong text selected.
Start typing your text to replace the default text.

To stop typing in bold, move the cursor past the ** and continue typing.
The same applied to Ctrl+I

Tip 3

Press Ctrl+A to select all the text in the editor.

Tip 4

To insert a link to another website or Connect post, press Ctr+K to open the Insert Link dialog.

In this dialog, type the website URL link.
for example www.YouTube.com

Also, add some text to which the link will be attached.

Click OK in the dialog box to close it and note that a hyperlinked text will appear which also opens the webpage.

Alternatively, you can attach a hyperlink to an existing word.
Select the word and press Ctrl+K to open the Insert Link dialog.

Type the website address and press OK.
The selected word will become a hyperlink to the website.

Note: The inserted hyperlink will open according to the settings in Preferences - Interface - Open all external links in a new tab.

Tip 5

To quickly insert the flag emoji for a country, type a colon : followed by the first 3 letters of the country

The flags of the country will appear and you can use the arrow keys to highlight the country flag then press Tab to insert it.

For example, type :indi for the flag emoji of India :india: and :indo for the flag emoji of Indonesia :indonesia:

Tip 6

For inserting a smiley emoji type :smil,
For the Namaskar  icon type :fold which will list both folder hands and the folder :open_file_folder: icons, because both start with the characters fold.

Press Tab to insert the highlighted emoji.

Use any word that appears in an emoji definition to search and insert the emoji.

For example :air will display

:small_airplane: :small_airplane: :flight_departure: :flight_arrival: :wheelchair: :pitcairn_islands:

Press Tab to insert the highlighted emoji.

Tip 7

To undo an action like undo a deleted word or sentence, press Ctrl+Z.
To redo an action, type Ctrl+Shift+Z.

Note: Press Ctrl+Z multiple times to undo multiple actions.

Tip 8

If you have copied something from another webpage that contains formatted text like hyperlinks, etc. press Ctrl+Shift+V to paste it as plain text which will automatically remove all the formatting.

Tip 9

If you know any emoji codes like  or  these are supported as well.

Tip 10

Pressing Esc will take you out of the post-composing mode.
Now you must click Resume or click the trash icon to discard the post permanently.

If you close the browser tab at this point, the post can be resumed by clicking on the Create button and selecting Drafts.

Tip 11

Here are a few more editor accelerators:

Select text, then Ctrl+Shift+9 = Quote the selected text.
Ctrl+Shift+8 = Bulleted List
Ctrl+Shift+7 = Numbered List

Note: Pressing these keys again removes the effect.

Do you know any other Pro Tips when using the text editor in LG Connect?
Please share them in the comments.

Thank you for sharing the shortcuts, @TusharSuradkar
Yes, I use most of them, not only in Connect but in all the text editors (I mostly use Google Docs) and several of them work also in Google sheets.
But I think they are for desktop only, not for mobile. Am I wrong?
I’m asking because a lot of the Local Guides are using Connect on mobile.
There is any shortcut for them?

That’s correct @ErmesT
These keyboard shortcuts are common across editors.

My favorite is Win + ;
This is a universal key for the emojis.

Since it is not connect-specific, I did not include it in the post.

Yes, these are primarily for non-mobile users, though I suppose that would be self-evident.

I will add an explicit note though if local guides miss the word keyboard shortcuts on the opening line.

Very comprehensive article @TusharSuradkar on keyboard shortcut on desktop computer in a new connect way.

I use most of them and some of them were there in older way of Connect platform also but Show Preview is revolutionary in the new Connect.

Did you find anything for ‘Underline’ like Ctrl+U?

For emoji shortcut we can even use ‘Win+.’ as well.

Thank you @Kumaarsantosh

Yes, most of these keyboard shortcuts are universal for most editors.
So I did not mention the basic Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V

The underline option is prominently missing in the new editor.
I even tried copying formatted text but the underline formatting won’t carry over.

Nice tip about the emoji key - also my favorite :+1:
Win + ;

Since it is a universal key and not Connect-specific, I did not include it in the post.

Yes, the preview is a nice feature, and I have requested that it should be open by default via the feedback form.

Thank you for the tips @TusharSuradkar . I always love shortcuts. As @ErmesT mentioned, many of them can also be used in text editing and I have used them as well while using keyboards.

I don’t think we can used it on notepad/tablet/mobiles though as it has different configurations

I have been using Canva a lot as well @ShreyaMusings … it’s very handy indeed. If I’m note mistaken @TusharSuradkar , @Tejal is one of the experts in Canva as well :fire::fire:

That is fantastic to know @indahnuria I wasn’t aware of your Canva skills :+1:
Would you be willing to conduct an online meeting for local guides, to discover the features of Canva to create amazing banners for our Connect posts and meetups?

That is exactly what I requested Sourav Prakash.

BTW, Tejal’s monitor is broken, is what I heard last from her.

This is a re-write of my original post for the old Connect from June 2020:
How To Accelerate Message Composing in LG Connect

It is well-known that most advanced online email composers and down to a simple text field have common keyboard shortcuts like Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V, Ctrl+X, Ctrl+Z, and so on…

What @ErmesT has mentioned is an open secret
