Accessibility in Focus - DW News Urdu Joins Local Guides for an Awareness Campaign

Hello Local Guides,

On 3rd December, we celebrate the :wheelchair:International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This day is not to imply that differently-abled individuals are separate from us, but rather to remind us of their rights and the facilities we need to provide for them, and how much progress we’ve made in this regard.

As part of this occasion, we organized an excellent Accessibility Awareness Meetup in Karachi. We invited local guides to join us in visiting various restaurants and businesses to educate their owners and managers about the importance of :wheelchair: accessible entrances.

The meetup was held on November 26th, and a unique aspect of this event was the involvement of DW News Urdu, a renowned German channel with millions of YouTube followers and 3.4 million followers on Facebook. They offered to film our activities and share our message with the world, which we gladly accepted.

At 3 PM, we gathered at Mailma Restaurant, a popular spot in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Food Street in Karachi. This restaurant stood out because it features an electric lift specifically designed for :wheelchair:wheelchairs, something rare in Karachi restaurants, where ramps are common but lifts are not.

I would like to thank @DrFoodieOfficial (Rizwan Shah), @Swalay , @muhammad_ilyas Ilyas , and @MuhammadAsimAli for their active participation in the event, especially Rizwan, who also contributed to the pre-event preparations. I also want to apologize to our friends who wanted to join the event virtually but couldn’t due to widespread internet shutdowns in Pakistan caused by political issues, which made hosting a virtual event impossible.

We were also joined by Muhammad Fahad Naqi, a differently-abled individual who participated in the campaign and shared his insights about :wheelchair:accessibility needs, particularly the benefits of ramps.

While Fahad’s recording was ongoing, we, as local guides, updated nearby shops and restaurants on Google Maps, ensuring that others could benefit from this accessibility meetup through the platform.

After Fahad’s recording, Mania Shakeel, the director of this DW News Urdu video, conducted detailed interviews with us. In these interviews, we emphasized the importance of :wheelchair: accessibility awareness. I also shared my personal experience with my late father, who spent his final year in a :wheelchair:wheelchair and often faced difficulties entering his favorite restaurants due to stairs and the lack of lifts.

Everyone expressed their heartfelt thoughts during the interviews, and we all shared the common goal of making a big impact through this small initiative.
Please Check Video by DW Urdu Here regarding Accessibility Awareness & Accessibility contributions on Google Maps.
I believe that once this video reaches the public, we will see a positive change in accessibility features on Google Maps in Pakistan. Currently, only a few of us contribute to accessibility on Google Maps here, but I am confident this number will grow soon.

I want to thank Google Maps, Local Guides Connect, all accessibility advocates, accessibility champions, and the Local Guides team for their continuous efforts. Your education and support have empowered us to raise awareness, even through international media, and to contribute to this noble cause.

I will tell you about one of my observestion I had in Southern India. I saw people get up in the morning, go to the tea stall, drink tea, read the newspaper, look at the lottery numbers at the booth, and purchase a ticket. What is interesting is that all of the lottery sellers are either blind or disabled. And I have seen similar things in Trivandrum, two or three neighboring towns, and even in railway trains. The best part is that they are not depended to anyone.
