I visited an **Open market **this past weekend in my immediate locality here in the Port Harcourt city in the south south of Nigeria where I live and work. I immediately noticed something as a local guide. It has always been there really, and it’s not my first time to visit This market . It has just become obvious now since being on connect and contributing actively as a local guide. Moreso since we celebrated and supported women-through-Google-Maps this past March. I have noticed the fact that **Thus market **is most women oriented !!! Most of the shops, stalls, buisnesses etc are women owned and led. It’s so thrilling and interesting to look around for details of this phenomenon. They are some men folks around and among the sellers of wares and goods but like I said earlier it’s mostly women orientated. I wrote a review the same day of my shopping and added a few photos as usual.
Interesting points about This market
- There are no much demarcation in this market. It’s difficult to strictly add certain shops or stall on the directory of the market on Google maps. It’s infact practically impossible
- Wares and goods are often just displayed on the floor and around in the market.
- Parking is quite difficult to find.
- No such thing as accessibility features
- Restrooms are not found as well.
- Prices of good are really not fixed. Your bargaining power as the buyer is a necessary and useful skill
If you look up My review of Creek Road market you’ll find much about what I am writing here. People are generally not aware of Google maps(Very low education on it). Infact sellers might be suspicious of you going around the market with an android or smart phone. They are quite security consciousness. Anyway the market is quite popular and well patronised. It’s also one of the cheapest you can find around. The locals love to shop here. A very wide range of food and perishable commodities are available in large quantities here. This kind of settings for an open market is quite usual in the different west African countries I have visited. What I’ll love to know is,does this kind of settings exits in South America for instance or India or Bangladesh(Asia and Middle East)
The Google maps thing aside,it’s a market you’ll love to visit as sellers are fun to be with. Most of the women and sellers know each other and are from the same local communities around. This market is called Creek Road market .
This is my second post on Empowering-women-through-Google-Maps . Hope you all like it,thank you for reading and happy women’s day again to all our lovely ladies on connect in arrears.
Happy guiding
Cheers
