An Open Market-Mainly Women Led.

I visited an **Open market **this past weekend in my immediate locality here in the Port Harcourt city in the south south of Nigeria where I live and work. I immediately noticed something as a local guide. It has always been there really, and it’s not my first time to visit This market . It has just become obvious now since being on connect and contributing actively as a local guide. Moreso since we celebrated and supported women-through-Google-Maps this past March. I have noticed the fact that **Thus market **is most women oriented !!! Most of the shops, stalls, buisnesses etc are women owned and led. It’s so thrilling and interesting to look around for details of this phenomenon. They are some men folks around and among the sellers of wares and goods but like I said earlier it’s mostly women orientated. I wrote a review the same day of my shopping and added a few photos as usual.

Interesting points about This market

  • There are no much demarcation in this market. It’s difficult to strictly add certain shops or stall on the directory of the market on Google maps. It’s infact practically impossible
  • Wares and goods are often just displayed on the floor and around in the market.
  • Parking is quite difficult to find.
  • No such thing as accessibility features
  • Restrooms are not found as well.
  • Prices of good are really not fixed. Your bargaining power as the buyer is a necessary and useful skill

If you look up My review of Creek Road market you’ll find much about what I am writing here. People are generally not aware of Google maps(Very low education on it). Infact sellers might be suspicious of you going around the market with an android or smart phone. They are quite security consciousness. Anyway the market is quite popular and well patronised. It’s also one of the cheapest you can find around. The locals love to shop here. A very wide range of food and perishable commodities are available in large quantities here. This kind of settings for an open market is quite usual in the different west African countries I have visited. What I’ll love to know is,does this kind of settings exits in South America for instance or India or Bangladesh(Asia and Middle East)

The Google maps thing aside,it’s a market you’ll love to visit as sellers are fun to be with. Most of the women and sellers know each other and are from the same local communities around. This market is called Creek Road market .

This is my second post on Empowering-women-through-Google-Maps . Hope you all like it,thank you for reading and happy women’s day again to all our lovely ladies on connect in arrears.

Happy guiding

Cheers

@SholaIB thanks for continuing to highlight the power of women owned businesses. This sound’s very familiar to what we have here in the USA called Flea or Farmers markets. Flea markets focus more on goods like furniture, toys jewelry, art and clothes. Farmers market’s bring local farm raised fresh fruits and vegetables mostly to be sold. I have not been to either in awhile and need to go check them out. Thanks for the reminder!

Kudos to @SholaIB for highlighting the vibrant women-led market scene at Creek Road! The detailed observations paint a vivid picture of the market’s vibrant atmosphere. Such empowering insights are truly inspiring. :star2:

It’s fascinating to see how women lead most of the stalls and businesses there. I love how markets like these not only provide a livelihood for local women but also create a strong sense of community. Your observations and the details you’ve added make me feel like I’m walking through the market with you!

Do you think that the strong presence of women in this market has influenced the types of products sold or the way they are marketed? @SholaIB

Yes @NahidHossain .

I think it has a good influence and effect on this market. Like the presence of a dear mother in a home. The aroma of the delicious food from the kitchen. The cleanliness and neatness of a home. All these has a good influence on the man and children in the family.

There is something magical about a woman’s touch !!! . Thank you for asking.
