Are photos' EXIF data important?

Hello local guides!

Are EXIF tags required on photo contributions and reviews on Google Maps? I’m testing a film camera and it happen to produce great photos and I’d like to upload it on Google Maps. Since they’re from a film scan, do I need to add EXIF data to them before uploading? Time taken and location data, to be more specific.

Do any of you guys have experiences contributing photos sans EXIFs? Looking forward to your replies.

Regards,

Onat

Good question @onat. As far as I know, Google doesn’t check EXIF and I am not aware of any published requirement for that. I am quite sure though, they ignore Geo-tags.

Possibly, @MortenCopenhagen knows more about that …?

Hi @WilfriedB and @onat

Exif data are useful in at least 2 situations:
When you share a photo from your photo / gallery to Google Maps the gps data in the file helps suggest relevant plces to add the photo to.

After you have flagged an image for being posted to a wrong place and you get an option to appeal this (only available in the EU) the gps coordinated are used.

So I would not waste my time manually adding metadata to your filmcamera photos.

Thank you very much @MortenCopenhagen and @WilfriedB!

It’s nifty that EU is utilizing location tags for that scenario. Could be helpful if they roll that out globally.

Thanks again!

That would be great. I doubt it as the appeals options were implemented only after the EU passed strict regulations on this.
