The festival is celebrated in the northern part of Ethiopia mainly in the Tigray Region of Mekelle City, Abiyi Adi, Axum and also Sekota and more.
In this annual festival girls and young women are dressed a very colorful cultural dress, jewelry and unique hairstyle. Ashenda girls celebrate the festival with Ashenda songs dance for three days or more.
During the festival women openly express their feelings through Ashenda songs. Therefore, it is also considered as a symbol of freedom for women.
Here are some of the photos that I manage to capture in Mekelle.
@KibromB@Sofiapinkie@Chiazodo Wow! Am really excited that is a cultural and religious festival exclusive for girls and woman. I would like to know if you still have an exclusive festival just like this for boys and men? Notwithstanding this is a beautiful writeup and a lovely photos you have here. Thanks for sharing.
@KibromB@Austinelewex It’s so amazing how diverse and beautiful cultures are. Ethiopia is one Country I’ve always wanted to visit and this content makes me even more proud to be African. The Ashenda women are indeed beautiful, the Ayni Wari Festival is satisfyingly colourful and your photography is amazing. Weldone.
Like many African countries Ethiopia has a diverse and colourful chaltur. So many holidays throughout the year… Ethiopian New year and MESKEL holidays coming soon.
Hi @KibromB . Thank you for sharing. The festival sounds and looks amazing. If it’s only for females, how were you allowed there? Are foreigners also welcome? It sounds like a lovely ritual and I’d be happy to experience it.
The festival is dedicated for girls and young women and they are the one who deliver the performance in the festival. However, everyone including tourists
are invited to watch the event to take pictures and videos and I was one of the audience.
