Last year, I was fortunate enough to travel to ConnectLive 2018 and meet some amazing Local Guides and make some lifelong memories. But before the event kicked off, there were a few tourist destinations and foodie dream stops I had to make. One of them was tasting and visiting the famous Boudin Bakery. The location I visited was the most iconic one at the Fisherman’s Wharf (1 of 30 cafes in California).
The first thing I noticed and anyone would notice about Boudin is the smell. The wafting smell of sourdough, fresh bread, sweet pastries, and cookies is intoxicating. Even if you were oblivious to what the building housed by looking at the signage, the smell would bring any food-loving person inside.
I am an avid foodie and bread is one of my ultimate weakness. Even though I wanted to try one of everything, I had to be smart and selective. I chose a chocolate chip cookie, a chocolate croissant, a sourdough loaf, and an Italian sandwich on fresh sourdough bread.
It can be difficult to describe the way the bread tastes, but you have this hard and tough exterior that when pierced has a light, airy, sour, and soft texture of delicious bread. The bit of advice that I received before traveling to San Francisco is that I needed to one…taste the bread and two…make sure that it is shaped like a cute animal. Some of the animal-shaped loaves are HUGE. I knew it would be impossible to carry around the hilly landscape all afternoon before I could eat it. So I settled on a cute bear. See him trying to hibernate and hide from me below.
The bakery interior is HUGE. They have elaborate storage areas for all their pastries and bread, tons of home goods, housewares, gifts, cookbooks, and more for sale as well. Fortunately for me, they also have ample seating including an outdoor patio, perfect for dining on tasty food with views of Alcatraz, the Wharf, and the bay just meters away.
Give It A Try On Your Next Visit
In summary, this bakery is a must-see. The food is high-quality, the history is rich and fun to learn, they have an adjoining coffee shop which is necessary after your gluten overload, and the prices aren’t outrageous.
