Boudin Bakery: Baking Delicious Sourdough Since 1849

Last year, I was fortunate enough to travel to ConnectLive 2018 and meet some amazing Local Guides and make some lifelong memories. But before the event kicked off, there were a few tourist destinations and foodie dream stops I had to make. One of them was tasting and visiting the famous Boudin Bakery. The location I visited was the most iconic one at the Fisherman’s Wharf (1 of 30 cafes in California).

The first thing I noticed and anyone would notice about Boudin is the smell. The wafting smell of sourdough, fresh bread, sweet pastries, and cookies is intoxicating. Even if you were oblivious to what the building housed by looking at the signage, the smell would bring any food-loving person inside.

I am an avid foodie and bread is one of my ultimate weakness. Even though I wanted to try one of everything, I had to be smart and selective. I chose a chocolate chip cookie, a chocolate croissant, a sourdough loaf, and an Italian sandwich on fresh sourdough bread.

It can be difficult to describe the way the bread tastes, but you have this hard and tough exterior that when pierced has a light, airy, sour, and soft texture of delicious bread. The bit of advice that I received before traveling to San Francisco is that I needed to one…taste the bread and two…make sure that it is shaped like a cute animal. Some of the animal-shaped loaves are HUGE. I knew it would be impossible to carry around the hilly landscape all afternoon before I could eat it. So I settled on a cute bear. See him trying to hibernate and hide from me below.

The bakery interior is HUGE. They have elaborate storage areas for all their pastries and bread, tons of home goods, housewares, gifts, cookbooks, and more for sale as well. Fortunately for me, they also have ample seating including an outdoor patio, perfect for dining on tasty food with views of Alcatraz, the Wharf, and the bay just meters away.

Give It A Try On Your Next Visit

In summary, this bakery is a must-see. The food is high-quality, the history is rich and fun to learn, they have an adjoining coffee shop which is necessary after your gluten overload, and the prices aren’t outrageous.

Hi @JordanSB ,

Okay wow! I’ve never seen a similar bakery ever! That looks way too delicious and like myself loving all kinds of pastries, it would’ve been really hard to leave  I’ve never been to California, but now this is definitely going on my list!

I like the bear pastry, was it sweet or savory? Which ones did you like most? Thanks for sharing this with us!

I’m glad that you get as excited as I do about baked goods, @DanniS !

As for the taste of sourdough, it has a mild yet slightly sour taste, so definitely on the savory side. as for my favorites, I do have a weakness for pan a chocolat aka chocolate croissants. Boudin’s were light, flaky, buttery, with deliciously bittersweet chocolate inside.

The point is in fact, that bread and other bakery is my beloved food. I think it is the base for all good dishes.

I’m happy that in SF is such a Bakery.

When you have the chance to come to Germany, you will find many bakeries with delicious bread.

Bread and bear is all I need for a good Sunday afternoon.

I’m 100% #teamBoudin! The sourness of the bread is fantastic. They say it’s the San Francisco weather and humidity that makes the bread so special. My favourite was the tomato soup in a bread bowl.

@JordanSB Definitely I need to go to this place in my next time in San Francisco. I love pastries, what can you recommend to me?

Hi, @SilvyC !

If you like pastries, I recommend the morning buns or croissants. These are some of the light and airy items that are delicious to me. They also have wonderful fruit bars, scones, muffins, cookies, and more!

Hi @JordanSB ,

Thank you for sharing this with us! It has been on my want-to-try food list for quite a long time, and this November I’m finally making my way to San Francisco. Your post is very helpful for me. And I can’t wait to try the signature sourdough bread.

By the way, I heard that Boudin’s Clam chowder is very good too. Did you try it?

Hi, @ChanneLing !

I saw all their soups and clam chowder in the delicious bread bowls. They looked great but it was so warm the day I visited that it put me off from ordering a warm dish. There is always next time, though! If you try it on your adventure, let us know your thoughts!
