Bulls fight during the Maghesangranti festival

In Taraka village of Nuwakot district, the Maghe Sankranti festival is celebrated uniquely with bullfighting as its main attraction. This ancient tradition, locally known as “Goru Jatra” or “Goru Ladhaune,” involves bulls competing against each other in a friendly match. It is believed to symbolize strength, bravery, and the festive spirit of the community.

The event attracts locals and visitors who gather to witness the dramatic clashes between bulls, which are often raised and trained for the purpose. The bullfights are accompanied by cultural rituals, feasts, and other celebrations that mark the end of the winter solstice and welcome longer, warmer days.

This tradition has been preserved for generations and reflects the agrarian culture of the region, where bulls play a significant role in farming and daily life. Alongside the bullfights, families in Taraka village celebrate Maghe Sankranti by preparing traditional delicacies like yams, sesame seed sweets (til ko laddu), chaku, and ghee, signifying prosperity and good health.
