Today is viewed as Energy Conservation Day (December 14th). This day is to create awareness and promote energy conservation in our society. As you know energy can neither be destroyed nor created but can be converted. When an energy is converted into another like fuel engines, there’s a depletion of the original source of the Energy but there’s also a sustainable energy source like electricity created from wind energy. There’s so many ways to conserve energy and be sustainable by:

  1. Don’t use plastic as recycling of plastics have bad impact on environment due to emission of CO2 and wastage of energy.
  2. Plant trees as they absorbs carbon (in a form of energy) from the atmosphere.
  3. Use less electricity during Day-Time.

Theme for 2024 : Powering Sustainability: every Watts counts

Aim:

  • Promote convenient ways to use sustainable energy.
  • Reduce CO2 emissions.
  • Recycle electronic products and reuse energy.

Search “Recycle electronics near me” phrase in search bar of Google Maps. Results will be only show those buisnesses which tapped “Yes” for recycling electronics in their Buisness Profile.

How a local business (cafe) in my area helps on this day.

  • No use of plastics which create no or less waste.
  • Coffee grounds and food wastes are used in the decomposition bin/ used as fertilizer.
  • Whole compound of the business is run by Solar Energy.

How Google Maps helps on this day.

  • Go to “settings” of Google Maps.
  • Scroll down and click on “Navigation”.
  • Click on “prefer fuel-efficient routes” to reduce fuel consumption while navigating.
  • Click on “your vehicle” to add what engine type you use.

Hybrid means vehicle which uses both fuel and Rechargeable battery as EV.

Besides EV charging stations and businesses that recycle, there are also public recycle bins that I added in large numbers in Pune:

  1. Garbage Bin Sai Chowk.
  2. Adar Poonawala Garbage Bin NIV.
  3. Adar Poonawala Dustbin Poorva Heights.
  4. Garbage Bin Mauli Pump.

I added all of these places to Google Maps.

Thank you Tushar for your valuable comment. Also you are doing amazing work on conserving and reducing plastics on streets by adding waste/plastic bins. I also added public E-toilet which use solar energy to Maps!

A very good post indeed @Rahul001 . This is the need of the hour. Many of our old practices follow sustainability. I still remember my dad telling everyone should be in the same room to save electricity. We should use the pencil and eraser till the end. He used to tell what we waste is the blood of the person who created it. The concept of use and throw has developed in the last 25 years. We used to carry our own containers to buy milk, oil etc. No plastics were used then. Not everything has changed drastically it is the responsibility of everone to save the earth. Thanks for sharing.
