City Graffiti: Cartoon & Fairy Tale Alley in Chiayi City

Early this year, I visited Chiayi City, a small town in the south of Taiwan and the place I was born and raised, to see my family. One interesting thing is that despite I’ve been into street art and graffiti for years, I didn’t have much chance to explore the graffiti or mural spots in my hometown, isn’t that strange? (lol)

This time, before I made my way back to town, I told myself to open my eyes wide to explore the city and see what I could find in this home-sweet town! And voila, in the city center, I found that there’s a small Fairy Tale Alley (童話密巷 in Mandarin) with murals of characters from animated series and fairy tales. Here comes the tour!

Looks very unique and interesting. Just wondering how often are they re painted ? Also wondering if sun and rain make them dull quite soon ? Do they draw new ones every time ? Super Mario one was very good to me.

Hi @Trail_blazer ,

Thanks for the comment! That’s a good question. I know for some graffiti gathering places in Taiwan, the walls are re-painted once in a while, yet for this one, it seems not the case as the color of some pieces has faded a bit.

And yes, you’re right! One of the biggest challenges of street graffiti is that the artwork could be dulled by natural forces (sun, rain, wind) or destroyed by man forces, which makes them more precious!

@ChanneLing Are these paintings also common in PRC ? I think they are common in Latin america, Europe but i don’t remember much of them in Asia may be some nations have it but i didn’t expect it in countries like China, Taiwan, India etc

Hi @Trail_blazer ,

In Taiwan, street art graffiti isn’t “everywhere” kind of common, but it can be spotted in some urban areas. Bigger cities, like Taipei, Tainan, Kaoshiung, or Taichung, have their own graffiti gathering places, such as Ximending in Taipei.

Here’re some other graffiti articles I wrote about in Taiwan. Feel free to check it out!
