"Editing is not supported for this image" when trying to edit photos through GoogleMaps

This is seriously breaking up my workflow.

When I add an image to GoogleMaps I’m no longer able to launch Google Photos directly from GoogleMaps to edit my photos.

“Editing is not supported for this image.”

  • The image is just a regular JPEG.

  • Google Photos can edit the same images just fine on its own - it just refuses to do so when opened through GoogleMaps.

  • The photos are taken by me, on the same phone that I’m using to upload to Googlemaps. The EXIF data confirms this.

  • I get the same message even if I launch the camera from within GoogleMaps. The photo I just took through GoogleMaps itself is not editable.

  • I get the same error message when I try to edit anything through GoogleMaps - screenshots, other images in other folders, etc.

  • I’m in the country of Laos, but this feature worked perfectly fine when I had a Samsung S9 in the same country, so it’s not a country restriction.

  • I’m using a Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra now.

Hi @VictorLin I think you should change the lable of this post to How tos. where you can find the solution of your problem. Also, want to tag @C_T who may help you in regard of Google photos. You also raise the issue on google photo forum.

Hello @VictorLin

If you’ve added a photo from Google Photos to Maps then once that photo has been added to Maps that photo is stored in a separate Maps image database and from that point on the nexus between that photo and Google Photos is lost. In fact, if you edit the photo in Google Photos it ha no impact on the copy of that photo already on Google Maps and you could even delete the photo in Google Photos and it would still appear in Google Maps. This being the case, if you wish to edit the photo in Maps then you would have to delete the current Maps photo, edit the original one in Google Photos and add the edited photo to Maps.

As @Rohan10 has mentioned, it is best to post questions like this in the How-tos section of Connect as others can contribute to the solution as well as learn from it. For these reasons I will have our post moved there.

Hi @VictorLin

Would you be able to test if this issue is also there when using your old phone. This will help us understand if the issue is linked/isolated to your new device.

Cheers

Morten

Hello @VictorLin ,

The How-tos section of Connect is the board where you can share your questions related to the Local Guides program or your Google Maps contributions. To keep Connect more organized, I will move your post there.

Hi @VictorLin

Looks like, as mentioned by @MortenCopenhagen , that the issue is related to the new phone.

Can you please share the details of your device:

  • Android Version
  • Google Maps app version
  • Google Photos app version

The issue can also be caused by the phone, because most of the producers use a “custom” version of Android

I am also having this issue on a S21 Samsung Galaxy, on Google Fi, bought from the Google store. Also really messing with my flow.

I’m having the same issue on a Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro.

Has anyone found a work around?

Same issue with Xiaomi 11T Pro, MIUI Global 13.0.13, Android 12, Google Maps 11.39.1606, Google Photos 5.99.0.462163635

I’ve been having this problem for over a year. I was able to edit images before uploading them on my Samsung s7, but have never been able to edit them on my Samsung s21. It is very annoying and I’ve hardly added any reviews since this has occurred.

It doesn’t look like this problem will ever be fixed.

I’m having the same problems with a Samsung Galaxy S21. All app permissions are allowed. I’m doing nothing different from my previous Galaxy S9 (it always worked there).

Now I can’t edit my pictures.
