Athirapilly Waterfalls:

Hello dear friends,

This post is in response to the challenge initiated by our dear Kashif Ji - #GemsOfTheWorld.

When you talk about ‘Gems of Kerala’, God’s Own Country, Rivers, Paddy fields, Waterfalls, Hill stations, etc. come in a row among many other destinations. And in waterfalls, the “Niagra of South India”, Athirappilly Water Falls stands out with different frames.

Athirappilly Water Falls (Google Maps -Here & Wiki -Here) is situated on the Chalakudy River, Thrissur, Kerala. The Chalakudy River originates from western ghats, which is home to many vulnerable and endangered species of fauna and flora. This waterfall is the largest one in South India measuring 25 metres (82 feet) high and almost 330 feet wide - popularly known as ‘Niagara’ of South India. It is well known for its mesmerizing beauty.

Getting down to the foot of the waterfall is slightly challenging as the path is fully rocky. However, once you get down, it is a good picnic spot - amazing scenes.

This waterfall is among the best waterfalls in India and also the most popular and famous. Many famous movies were shot here, including the Bahubali.

Another waterfall, Vazhachal Falls (locally known as Chapra Falls) is about 7 km from here.

How to reach: Both the falls are located on State Highway 21, which connects Kerala to Tamil Nadu, through dense forest. Chalakudy Railway Station & Bus stand is 30km away & Cochin International Airport is 53 km**.**

Accessibility: Due to rocky terrain, the fall is totally not accessible; however, one can have a distant look from the entrance gate.

Note: heavily raining season, the falls will be closed as it turns violent. Carry an extra set of clothing as there are chances you get wet.

Here are some of the mesmerizing photos of the wonderful waterfalls,

Happy that you enjoyed the post, dear @Safdarrai

Thanks for visiting this page & supporting.

Regards with greetings

I have heard a lot about the waterfalls in Kerala but I missed seeing them on both trips to this state in the past 2 trips.

The previous trips were dedicated to hill stations with the tea gardens and boathouse respectively.

Looking at the amazing photos of the gorgeousAthirappilly waterfall I am inspired to visit Kerala one more time just for the waterfalls

@TravellerG What would be the best time of the year to visit this waterfall?

You seem to have taken the photos - definitely not during the monsoons since the sky looks clear

Hermoso lugar, impresionante cascada, me gustaría ir ahí.

What an amazing post @TravellerG Sahab, your post recalled my recent memories of Skardu Gilgit Baltistan. I was there in October/November and it was one of the best trip of my life, the reason is, I’m a nature lover as you are.

Do you know one thing @TravellerG that your every new post about South India makes me crave to visit and see these amazing places by myself. But unfortunately I can’t because of the reasons you know.

But I’m hopeful for future InshaAllah.

Thanks for writing #GemsOfTheWorld Challenge

Oh… I see…, dear @TusharSuradkar

I’m sure, your Tea Garden & Houseboat trips would have been amazing.

" I am inspired to visit Kerala one more time just for the waterfalls…"

Thanks a lot for your kind words…

You are always welcome… Please.

By visiting Athirappilly falls, you can also cover Vazhachal falls, around 7 km away.

The best times to visit will be post Monsoon and before trains stop fully… Say from August to January (of course depending upon the rain) - during heavy rains, many of the falls will be closed.

You are right that I visited during May.
