Google Maps Landmark Icons Challenge

Google Maps recently started displaying icons for important monuments in a city.

These landmark icons help a lot when researching a new city for the best spots. The icons have helped me to know the part of the city that popular attractions and landmarks are concentrated. For Delhi, these are mostly in the eastern and the south parts so I can easily decide to stay in that area.

Earlier the places were lost among a sea of orange, blue, and green icons. Thanks to this cool new feature major landmarks are now seen as a small thumbnail making it easier to recognize the monument and also providing a quick glance like a birds-eye-view.

The major emphasis is on historical landmarks but there more recent places as well.

The Challenge

What are the major landmarks that you can locate in your city or your favorite place?

  1. Take a screenshot of Google Maps and share it in your reply or a new post?

  2. Also share links of those places - Google Map links or your Connect posts about those places.

  3. Qutub Minar

  4. Lotus Temple

  5. Humayun’s Tomb

  6. Gurudwara Bangala Sahib

  7. Rashtrapati Bhawan

  8. Laxmi Narayan Temple

  9. Jama Masjid

  10. Red Fort

  11. India Gate

  12. Akshardham Temple

@TusharSuradkar That’s a cool challenge. Thanks for making aware of this feature. Let me look for landmarks in my local area.

This is a really nice challenge @TusharSuradkar , but not a single landmark icon in my state appears on Google Maps.

Right @NareshDarji

That’s surprising since Ahmedabad is also full of iconic monuments like Delhi.

Perhaps they decided to add those for a few cities initially. Since Mumbai too has 8-10 icons.

Let’s wait or request Google to add for Ahmedabad.

Hey @TusharSuradkar

It’s high time I break the silence and also participate in this challenge. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I noticed that they are no special icon on these landmark places here on the map of Ghana in the city of Accra.

Could it be that the feature is been rolled out gradually?

The places I have in mind are some I have written a post about before now but when I checked they were no special icon on them

Thanks for participating dear @Rohan10

Out of curiosity, I browsed Mumbai and found 10 places:

These are not exact locations since I have not composed the final image yet.

The above is a rough composition.

Hi @SholaIB

Long time…

Exciting to see you back… … and bummer, only select cities have iconic places.

That is, unfortunately, a fact and I am trying to reach out to Google to have a few more cities included for the iconic landmarks.

Until then… let’s keep our fingers crossed :crossed_fingers:

The various icons make Mexico City appear even more interesting @LaloPadilla ,

Each one is unique, especially the one for Museo Soumaya.

What does CDMX mean? never hear that before

Nice game @TusharSuradkar !!! However, it seems it is limited some cities specially metros in India. Never the less, I loved Hyderabad city in India, especially for food and historical monuments.

Buddha statue

Birla Mandir

Salar Jung Musuem

Charminar

Chowmahalla Palace

Qutb Shahi Tombs

I hope I covered most of it.

Cheers!

@Tushar_Suradkar CDMX It’s an acronym for “Ciudad de México”

The shape of Museo Soumaya it’s amazing, and if you get closer it is full of hexagons, I recommend to look at it from differet points of view to gaze at the hex panels. Here is a picture from this post #ListsChallenge : Must-visit Museums in Mexico City

Nice one @TusharSuradkar ! Is that screenshot you posted taken from the desktop version? When trying, on Android, to look for landmarks in Brussels, I do see quite a few, but I’m not able to see more than 3 of them at the same time, no matter which zoom level.

Hi @AjitThite

Nice map of Hyderabad :+1: and you are right :heavy_check_mark:

Pune and Ahmedabad are not in the list.

I am trying to find whom to reach out to get these cities listed.

It is surprising that the top monument like Salarjung museum doesn’t have an icon :astonished:

Also, Paradise Biryani should also have an icon

Hi @JanVanHaver

Your observation is right and is same as mine.

I composed the map with a image editor to show all icons at the same time

Well @TusharSuradkar , in Hyderabad, they have listed Salar Jung, you can see the icon in my post. But they totally missed the Golkonda fort. Hopefully in the next updates it will be covered.

Cheers!
