Homemade ZA’ATAR (Thyme) Naan Bread

Flat Naan bread with Zaatar dressing is quite popular in Saudi Arabia. Here it is quite common to see the Afghani restaurants serving this delicious bread baked in tandoor clay oven. Zaatar (Thyme) is a form of herb which is rich in Calcium, Magnesium, Iron and Zinc. Preparing the delicious zaatar bread at home is simple and requires only few ingredients.

Ingredients to prepare the Zaatar Bread at home:

  • All purpose flour
  • Olive oil
  • Warm water
  • Instant yeast powder
  • Zaatar mix
  • Salt

Procedure:

  • A dough is prepared by mixing the flour with yeast and salt. Now slowly add the olive oil along with the warm water in middle of the dough and knead it until the dough become smooth, non-sticky and soft.
  • Cover the dough with a wet cloth in a warm place for at least half an hour and you will see the size double after that duration of time.
  • Now using the rolling pin, flatten the dough and spread the zaatar mixed with olive oil on the flat dough.
  • Preheat the electric oven to 200 degree C and bake the flatten dough for at least ten minutes and enjoy eating them warm once removing from the oven.

Hi @fasi6083 and thanks for your post about homemade Za’atar. Za’atar on naan was a fave of mine during my trip to Aqaba.

Hello @fasi6083 ,

Thank you for sharing these photos and recipe with us, the bread looks very delicious!

It seems that the ingredients are affordable and above all available everywhere. As I love the thyme flavor, I guess I will try to make this bread at home.

In Bulgaria, where I live, there is a similar bread called parlenka and it is usually made the same way, but instead of thyme they put garlic paste, or cheese.

The people here are obsessed with Zaatar, I have seen Zaatar in almost all bakery products and food dishes (Excluding the desserts) @AdamGT

Thanks @BorrisS Have you ever tried baked bread filled with cheese and sugar? Labneh (Greek yogurt) served with soft pita bread is very popular in my city.

Hello @fasi6083 ,

I don’t think I ever tried this bread, but it sounds very delicious!

Do you know what kind of cheese is used in it?

That looks really good! Thank you for the photo @fasi6083 .

I think you’re right, from the color it looks like cheddar.

As long as it’s not halloumi cheese, I’m ready to try it.
