I am enthusiast in photography (mostly landscapes) and occasionally I like to upload quality photographs to Google Maps via my PC.
I was trying to find any useful information about recommended resolution or size for the photos but could not find anything which is a bummer.
Before uploading anything I usually resize my shots to a size which is between Full HD and Quad HD. If I open any of the resized stuff on my computer they look pin sharp from edge to edge. After uploading it to Gmaps they look non sharp and a little blurry which is really annoying.
Is there any way around this? Any ideas would be appreciated!
I normally upload the photos on Google Maps directly from my device, or from desktop.
On addition, I don’t resize the photos that I upload on Google photos, because with the “high quality” settings Google Photos already resized my photos to 16 Mpx.
Be careful in setting Google Photos on Full Resolution, as suggested by @ShafiulB , because in full resolution everything you upload is counted against your space, while on High quality you have unlimited storage.
My suggestion, instead of resizing your photos to upload on Maps, is to upload the photos on Google Photos first, then, from Google Maps, choose Google photos as the source for the photos you want to upload.
Whatever photo you upload to maps, the app will present a version of that suitable to the display hardware available with the viewer.
Thus, instead of struggling to upload high resolution and higher file sized photos, it would be appropriate to present a snap which provides an adequately clear view of the POI or uncovers some hitherto unknown facet.
Thank you very much @ErmesT for the fast response. I check what you and @ShafiulB said and it seems like nothing much changed.
So basically I went to my Google Photos, everything is set up like it was mention by you. I uploaded 2 pictures to check. When I open them from Google Photos it is tack sharp as it supposed to be. When I check on the same image which was now uploaded to Gmaps from “my photos” it still looks pixelated. It might be a Gmaps algorithm which is downgrading the resolution because just by looking at random photos I could not find anything what I would consider sharp.
Just to demonstrate what I am talking about here is a picture attached about the comparison. On top is Gmaps, below is GPhotos. Difference is night and day…
I hope it is visible, if not here is a shared folder
@ErmesT , @C_T and @ShafiulB told you the option you can use. I would like to suggest you ask your question in Google Maps Help forum too, where they will give you additional information.
Hi, download you photos local pc / laptop and then sign in to Google Maps using the web browser and then write the review of the place and there is option to upload the image which you can do.
I dont like this conversation not cleared by support team. Google drastically lowers the image quality to save their storage, thats it. Sadly even your cloud stored photo also will be resized to very low quality when u add in google maps. At least should not be resized from google photos. sad.
My images on the mobile app (tested on iOS, haven’t tested Android) appear noticeably sharper than on a desktop web browser. Furthermore, I found that resizing desktop windows affected the image quality. Try zooming out (CMD + - on MacOS) and see if that improves the image quality. It improves it on my end although it is far from the original quality of the image I uploaded.
