How to write a great meet-up recap

You organized a meet-up, connected with other like-minded Local Guides during the event, and had an exciting experience together. Now what? Tell us about it, of course!

Sharing your meet-up recap on Connect is now easier than ever. Simply follow the steps and tips below to create a great recap post.

How to create a recap

Once your meet-up has concluded, head to your meet-up announcement on Connect, where you will see a blue button at the bottom: Create recap.

To find your meet-up announcement, go to Meet-ups > Past > My meet-ups or to your Connect profile > Activity tab > Topics.

The “Create recap” button is visible to the meet-up host and everyone who has attended the meet-up after marking their attendance on Connect. The person who first clicks on the button will start a new topic thread and their recap will appear in the Recaps feed. There’s no limit to the number of replies, so any co-host and attendee can add their own recap and photos in the comments of the recap topic! Note that our moderators will merge recap topics that appear in categories outside of Meet-ups to keep things organized.

Tip: If you’re the host and you want your recap to appear in the top position of the recap topic, click on “Create recap” right after your meet-up has ended to create a simple placeholder topic. You can quickly thank your meet-up attendees for joining and write that you will shortly replace this placeholder with a more elaborate recap! You can come back to it whenever you’re ready to share more!

When someone creates a recap, a new button will appear at the bottom of the meet-up announcement: View recap. This is now visible to the whole community and will open the recap topic.

What to include in your recap

Tell us the theme of your meet-up
Did you gather to learn how to improve your photo skills or add accessibility information to make the map more inclusive? Go on a burger crawl because you’re searching for the perfect one? Or maybe you connected online to talk about your favorite type of Maps contribution? Whatever the reason, include this in your recap.

Describe your experience in detail
Tell us what we missed! Include details that help us better understand what it was like to be at your meet-up. Where did you go? What did you see? Who did you meet and what did you talk about?

Include great photos
Don’t pass up on an opportunity to show us your photo skills. Only share photos you’ve taken yourself or have permission from the photographer to use. If your meet-up was virtual, include relevant screenshots. If there are other people in your pictures, be sure they’re OK with you posting them!

Add links to your contributions
Did your meet-up include writing reviews, taking photos or videos, or adding new places? Share them with us in your recap.

Reveal what you learned
Every meet-up is unique. Even if you’ve been to 30 meet-ups, there’s always something new to learn at the next one. Whether you mastered a helpful photo tip or discovered a fun fact about a fellow Local Guide, share your insights with us in your recap.

I wish we could request the Google Moderators to remove a recap if it was found that someone other than the host had hit that magic button.

For local guides, Connect moderators should be given access to revoke the Recap in favor of the host, after checking.

Although we had an unwritten rule to let the host have the right and privilege of writing the first recap post in old Connect, new local guides did not always follow it.

Else, we need more coding in the backend to let only the host see the recap button and not everyone.
