Update 23/3: Please check this post for the logo design files
Apologies for the slight delay as I’ve been quite busy spinning plates but I’ve been tinkering away at my design file and it’s now ready to share with the community!
Quick recap:
- In January, I announced a design challenge to the community to come up with a 10th anniversary themed logo and t-shirt designs
- In February, we started the voting process and eventually ended up with joint winners @ShifaAymal and @Rakshith_LG for the logo category and my design was chosen for the t-shirt category
- Since then I’ve been working with Shifa to get her design printer ready. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to get a hold of Rakshith to do the same. And I’ve now completed the tidying up of my t-shirt design
Here’s the important info:
- You can access the t-shirt design file in this Google Drive folder
- As stipulated in the design challenge, there is an area in my design that is designated as modifiable by the community. This is the letter “O”. What this means is that you, the community, can take my design and replace the letter “O” with your own design to customise it to suit your community
- I’ve also gone one step further and made the colour scheme for the whole design completely and easily changeable. See further down for the details
- In the Google Drive folder, I’ve also shared some variants/examples that you can use immediately
- In summary, feel free to make changes to the colour scheme and/or to the letter “O”. For consistency, please refrain from making any other changes. Thanks
What is in the Google Drive folder?
The main folder contains:
- The default design (.png file)
- Colour variants in blue, green, pink and purple (.png files)
- Community variants for generic Local Guides community logo and one incorporating Shifa’s logo design. I will include Rakshith’s logo once I’m able to establish contact with him
- Three sub folders:
- Variants - Country Flag Community variants that incorporates several country flags; I am aware that I couldn’t do all flags in the world but do let me know if you need one making and I’ll try my best
- PDF versions PDF versions of the 7 .png files in the main folder. Some printing shops like to receive the design in a .pdf format instead of .png since .pdf files do contain more information on the colour palette and other useful bits
- Design files The actual design file in .afdesign (Affinity Designer software) and .psd (Photoshop) format. I created my design using Affinity Designer and I can’t fully vouch that the .psd format works correctly since I don’t have Photoshop to verify. I have preserved the layers in the design file so that it’s easy for you to make changes
How to make changes to the design?
The design has an overall dimension of 242.5 x 121.4 mm. This fits within the size of an A4 paper which makes it easy for the printing shop and also if you are ordering iron-on transfers.
The layers are shown below:
From the top layer downwards:
- Community Variants
- Country Flags - this is where you can (hopefully) find your country flag that you can enable/disable. There are two versions; a flat version and a 3D-ish version
- Generic Logo - this is the generic Local Guides community logo. Feel free to change the colours
- Logo - ShifaAymal - this is the logo design done by Shifa. You can change the background colour (currently set to pink) but not the colours of her logo itself
- When adding your own design to replace the letter “O” please take note that the letter “O” is a perfect circle with 50.5mm diameter
- Colour Variants I’ve included the four variants (Blue, Green, Pink, Purple)
- Default This is the default colour scheme which is made up of 5 colours (Colours 1 - 5). Generally, I would advise keeping Colour 1 as black. Feel free to alter Colours 2 - 5. Also, when I generated the 4 colour variants (Blue, Green, Pink, Purple), all I did was swapped in different colour tints from light (Colour 2) to dark (Colour 5) but feel free to experiment and play with different choices
- Colour 1 = #000000 (black)
- Colour 2 = #FFF300 (yellow)
- Colour 3 = #7EB642 (green)
- Colour 4 = #ED1E84 (pink)
- Colour 5 = #7155A3 (purple)
- My design file is setup with a CMYK/8 colour format with a US Web Coated (SWOP) v2 Colour Profile. What does that mean? I have no idea but CMYK is generally preferred by printing companies so hopefully what you see on screen is how it will look like when printed. That said, I usually have issues with colours not looking correct! Also, the .psd file’s thumbnail shows a very different colour palette so be mindful!
- 10TH ANNIVERSARY Do not alter
- Background stroke Do not alter
- Do Not Show I enable this layer and change the colour to see how well the design would fit on different coloured backgrounds. When sending your modified design to the printing shop, please remember to disable this layer again.
Anyway, I hope that the information above will help you with getting any of the included design variants printed out and also if you’re considering making changes and adding your community themed element to replace the letter “O”.
And now for the “boring” part ; here’s some info regarding the design itself. The early concept that I had in my head and what I sketched out on paper looked nothing like this finished design! I was trying to come up with a design that is consistent for both the logo and t-shirt design challenges but that was quite tricky; I couldn’t actually re-use this design style for the logo.
I also chose quite muted (dark-ish) colours because I didn’t want to mimic Google’s bright colour palette. But I generally like to have contrasting colours in my design so that it would be eye-catching. I also went for a very simple design that is pretty literal with nothing fancy but the stylisation of the letters that make up “LOCAL GUIDES”. That way, the message is clear and legible.
Anyway, if you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the comments section below. And if you happen to print the design out or add your community element into the design, please do share them below as well! I am curiously excited to see what the community will do with this design.
