Leaderboards of the Most Viewed Photos

Caption: This post is about stars and this photo, taken in Dubai, is of the star at the center of the Solar System! (Photo: AdamGT)

This post is no longer being updated. For details on the latest most viewed photos leaderboards, see here.

Summary:

As Local Guides we like taking photos and we have this board dedicated to photography where we share our best and most interesting photos from both our Maps reviews and from our day-to-day lives and travels. We also share ideas and tips on how to improve our photography, and many offer help and advice to those like me who often need it and I have to say, that I really love this aspect of Connect and have written about this before. However, unless I’m wrong, we don’t say much about our photo performance on Maps or how we can improve this*.* This and the Leaderboards of Photo Views posts are about this and together look at how we might be able to measure and improve our photos performance. The analysis is based on the data provided by Local Guides here on Connect and not data scraped by me off publicly available information. And you can participate!! As well as interesting detailed leaderboards ranking this data, the posts encourage discussion and engagement between LGs which I know you will enjoy!!!

Regardless on what total number of photos or reviews you’ve added to Maps, regardless on the total photo views you have, regardless if you come from a large city or some small rural village, regardless on whether you are a Level 1 or already a Level 10 Local Guide, you should consider participating!!

Details:

When it comes to photos on Maps, we can sort these by date and by views and when sorted by views the photo at the top (the one having the most views), is what I call our “star photo”. Now it’s often amazing which of all our great photos is our “star photo” so I thought it would be fun, interesting and perhaps educational to create leaderboards of the top viewed photos.

Now it’s most likely that the leaderboard of star photos would include the photos of LGs that have been guiding for some time, probably top-tier LGs, Level 8, 9 and 10 (more time = more reviews + more photo views and hence more points). So, in trying to create a level playing field, we have leaderboards for different LG levels. Thus, if you’re a Level 10 LG you would be on the Level 10 Leaderboard and if you’re a Level 7 LG you would be on the Level 7 Leaderboard and so on. In this way, all LGs can participate! So join in the fun and by doing so, I’m confident that you will learn more about your contribution photos on Maps. Keep in mind that this is not a competition. It’s about sharing your photo performance data so we can all learn and improve.

What you need to do:

There are some basic requirements for participating. While it might look complicated, it’s not. It’s really simple. Just reply to this post with a message containing the following information:

  1. A screenshot or photo of your “star photo” - Visit your Photos Contribution area and sort your photos by views to show your “star photo”, the top photo having the highest number of views. Take a screenshot or photo of your “star photo” clearly showing the number of views and add this to your reply message. You must make sure that you select a policy compliant photo. For more details about this step see the Taking a screenshot of your star photo post created by Erik_van_den_Ham.
  2. The Maps Category of the place of your star photo (as specified by Google) and provide a brief description of what the photo is off.
  3. Date of your Star Photo - Work out the date that you uploaded your star photo to Maps and add this to your message. You might need to approximate this from the date of your review or the photo’s date created value (see your photo’s Metadata properties). Please also indicate the source of the date, for example (a) Date uploaded to Maps or (b) Photo’s meta Date created.
  4. Tell us if this is your best photo.
  5. Tell us why you think it’s your “star photo”.
  6. Tell us what you think are the important factors that contribute to photo view stats.
  7. What camera did you use to take your “star photo”?
  8. Provide the total number of photos that you have uploaded onto Maps, (see new post)
  9. Add the total number of photo views, (see new post)
  10. Check and submit your information, and then show your support by liking this post ?

To make it easy for you, easy for me to include your data on the leaderboards, and also make things a lot easier for everyone who follows this post, when providing your information a standard format is preferred. In this regard, please provide your answers as a numbered list, for examples click on any of the Connect Usernames in the Leaderboards below. If you don’t supply all the information or in the right format it may not be included or at best it might be delayed from being included. Please make sure to read the FAQs at the end of this post.

Conclusion:

I didn’t plan this post nor see it as a competition to see who are the best LGs. Nor is it a post about LG points! It’s about our contribution photos and the performance (views) of our photos on Maps, and we don’t get points for views do we? Being keen photographers we want more and more people around the world to see our great photos! Hence, this post is about views and not points! There’s more to come as some interesting developments based on the focus of this post are planned! So stay tuned.

This post is about our single star photo. A spinoff of this post is the Leaderboards of Photo Views (November 5, 2020) and the Top 100 100 Photo Views post which look at total photo views and after you finish up here, if you haven’t read and joined in these posts then check them out!

Finally, it’s not my style to ask for ? but on this occasion I do have a reason so if you do participate I’m looking for you to show your support in the usual way.

FAQs:

  1. Is this a competition to see who is the best? No this is not a competition to see who is the best or who has the most points or photos! It’s more about performance and quality of our contribution photos and to learn how we can improve these.
  2. Are the Leaderboards automatically updated? No sadly not. This is a totally manual effort so please be patient.
  3. How often are the Leaderboards updated? The leaderboards will be updated from time to time and each time they will be time and date stamped. While initially I will regularly update the ladders, after a while they will only be updated say at the end of each month, and for how long for, well we’ll see. Please be patient with updates. Please see the important notice above.
  4. What happens when my “photo views” increases? Yes of course every day we all add photos and more people see our photos so the view counts stats are dynamic variables that can change each day. Also, the later you enter the leaderboards the more time your photos will have had to gain more views compared to the earlier entrants. All this is irrelevant at the moment as at a given point in time I will normalize all the data for better consistency on the Leaderboards. I will also provide the opportunity to update or show how the data has changed over given time period(s).
  5. What happens if I jump or drop from one Local Guide level to another? Being totally manual, the Leaderboards are not perfect but simply a snapshot of the situation at a given point in time and for the purpose of this analysis it really doesn’t matter! However, as mentioned in FAQ #3, future updates are foreshadowed.
  6. I submitted my information but why don’t I appear on the Leaderboards? There could be a number of reasons for this but most likely, you have not provided the information required or you information is in the wrong format and/or unclear. If this is the case your entry won’t be included or at best it might be delayed from being included. If this happens you should re-read the section above about what is required. Also make sure you read any messages from me, including private messages. When your entry is ready to be included you will see that I give it my like. If you don’t like my post I won’t like your entry ?
  7. Do I submit my photo view information to you in a private message? No! Please submit it as a comment to this post!
  8. Why is there and * at the end of some of the Connect usernames on the leaderboards ? These users are Connect Moderators.
  9. Why are Connect Usernames shown as links in the leaderboards? Clicking on the Username will take you to that users entry.
  10. Why are some entries on the leaderboards shown in [ ] ? These are the entries added to the leaderboards at the last update on the date shown at the bottom of the leaderboard in [Last Updated: …].

A number of LGs have helped me crystalize my thoughts on how to present this post and in correcting errors in my presentation. You’ll see the comments of these LGs in the post but I’d like here to acknowledge their great help and in particular, that of MortenCopenhagen and Erik_van_den_Ham who also helped behind the scene!

Note: The information on the leaderboards has been volunteered by the participating Local Guides and not scraped by me from publicly available data. If you participate then you agree that I may visit your Connect and/or Maps Profile to check and update any details that are needed. As a participant you should check your entries in the leaderboards and if there are any errors or omissions then advise me by way of a comment on this post.

Here is the simple numbered list layout of how to submit your information:

  1. Below is my “star photo”:
  2. The Maps Category of my Star Photo is Home improvement store and the photo is just a quick snap taken inside a local hardware store and you wouldn’t know that it is a hardware store just by looking at the photo would you! You would be excused for thinking it was some junk yard!
  3. I took/uploaded this photo on: 27 Nov 2018 (Source: Photo’s metadata Date created)
  4. Is it my best photo? Definitely not and it never ceases to amaze me why it is my “star”. As you will see it’s nothing special really. It’s by far not my best photo! It’s not of a great cafe or restaurant! It’s not a photo of an amazing sunrise, or sunset, or an amazing landscape, building, or sculpture! It’s just a rather unimpressive photo I took inside a local hardware store!!! It’s not a photo of the storefront! You can’t see the name of the store!
  5. Why do I think it’s my “star photo”? The photo was just a point and shoot taken without much thought and at this stage, other than what I say at step 6 below, I really have no idea why it’s my “star photo” but I’m keen to learn more!!!
  6. I think the important factors that contribute to making a top photo are:
    (a) How long the photo has been online
    (b) The popularity of the POI (the more popular, the more likely photos will be viewed), and
    (c) Is it the featured photo for the POI
  7. The camera I used is: Google Pixel 3XL cellphone
  8. My total number of photos is: 21579 (see new post)
  9. My total number of photos views is: 89,038,282 (see new post)
  10. Kudos to the post has been given

Caption: My most viewed photo (LG: @AdamGT )

An alternative and simple way to cover step 1 is to visit your Maps Photos Contribution tab and take a screenshot or photo of the first section of your photos in views order showing the star photo and star photo views (see example here).

Updated: 07:00 EST 8 September, 2020 because the study of total photo views has been moved to a second post, the Leaderboards of Photo Views post.

Hello @MAHBUB_HYDER

Congratulations you are on the ladder! As per the instructions, please edit your comment and tell us something about the photo. For example: what is it of? Where did you take it? What camera did you use? Is it your best photo? Why do you think it’s your “star” photo?

Hi @AdamGT

It’s a fun project and here is my contribution.

It has been getting a lot of views quite suddenly. I think the restaurant might be using this image in their advertising efforts or maybe the restaurant earned a price or something.

It is a gourmet restaurant with fairly competitive prices. They make beautiful dishes: almost as art pieces.

Here is the link to the place on Google maps:

Marv & Ben (meaning Bone and marrow)
https://maps.app.goo.gl/pd6654niAkKbwt5b6

Here is a link to their Instagram account where you can see some of their art pieces:

http://instagram.com/marvogben

I’m not particularly proud of this image. I regret not zooming out more. When displayed in the wide formats often used on Google Maps the name sign is not even visible. But the image cropped to the square format works fine.

I have never eaten there. Only at their sister restaurant which is phenomenal.

Congrats for keeping the top position on the ladder, @AdamGT .

Cheers from Copenhagen

Morten

Ps: why are you referring to review photos? I only know about one list of most viewed photos.

Update by July 26

  1. Star pic has 2.698.342 views
It gets 36.731 new views per day (averaged over last 4 days)

2 what is the photo of?

The front of a gourmet restaurant downtown Copenhagen
3 provide the date that your “star photo” was uploaded.

May 2019 (Source = Date on Google Maps)
4 is it your best photo?

It has gotten the most views on Google Maps! So I guess it is the best from a Google Maps perspective. As mentioned above I regret not zooming our some more to make it look good in the wider formats also used on Google Maps.
5 why do you think it’s your “star photo”?

This restaurant can be found on lists on Google Maps of restaurants with Michelin star-ratings, I also suspect my shot might be used in paid advertising on Google Maps. It is currently the cover photo of the place.
6 what do you think are the important factors that contribute to photo view stats?

See my other posts on this in this thread: Including being the cover photo of a popular hotspot.
7 what camera did you use?

Huawei P30 Pro phone
8 provide the total number of photos

Hello @AdamGT what a fun idea! Here is my ‘star’ (which in my eyes it is definitely not) but it is the one that get’s the views.

Aerial picture taken from the roof of the N.V. Nederlandse Gasunie

The Gasunie is a Dutch natural gas infrastructure and transportation company operating in the Netherlands and Germany. Gasunie owns the Netherlands gas transmission network with a total length of over 12,000 kilometres (7,500 mi) and 3,100 kilometres (1,900 mi) long network in Germany.

  1. Above is my “star photo”:
  2. The Maps Category of my Star Photo: Gas company
This is a aerial picture taken from the roof of the Gasunie Building
  3. I took/uploaded this photo on: March 2013
  4. Is it my best photo? This my ‘star’ (which in my eyes it is definitely not) but it is the one that get’s the views.
  5. Why do I think it’s my “star photo”? I have no good explanation for it It’s been online a long time and was even copied and part of copyright infringement by some commercial companies and organisations. Perhaps this made others search for this image too and find it on maps?
  6. I think the important factors that contribute to making a top photo are:
    (a) How long the photo has been online
    (b) The popularity of the POI (the more popular, the more likely photos will be viewed), and
    (c) Is it the featured photo for the POI
    (d) Brightness/ contrast and vivid colours
    (e) Is the picture also shown at a (general) place POI (you can’t add pictures too but the AI select some pictures for)
  7. The camera I used is: Canon 60 D with 80mm lens
  8. My total number of photos is: 5,579
  9. My total number of photos views is: 43,675,164

This building is not easily accessible as it could be a target for terrorism. I had to visit the building several times for work. The Gasunie Building is one of the most famous buildings in Groningen. It was built as a headquarters for Gasunie and was officially opened on 22 April 1994. The building has 18 floors and is 89 metres (292 ft) high, which makes it the second tallest building in Groningen after the Martinitoren.

I new there was a wonderful view from the top floor and I would really like to take pictures. So I asked the security if I was allowed to do that. They guys were very friendly and he proposed something even better. Not taking pictures trough the glass from the top floor but going out on the roof.
That was a unique opportunity for me and I took many pictures from different spots and in different directions.
This one shows a shot of the highway with a large roundabout underneath.

And also the Apollo Hotel that was fairly new when I took this picture (the black and white one on the right side of the road).

Hi @Erik_van_den_Ham

Interesting photo. So your photo is not actually showing Gasunie, but it is taken from the rooftop of Gasunie, right?

I would think the photo rightfully should be posted to the Apollo Hotel instead. When flagging photos as Not a photo or video of the place or Wrong place on IOS you might lose your photo and it would stop earning views for you should it be marked private.

Considering that our contributions should be helpful for Maps users I think you posted it to the wrong place.

I think it could be relevant to discuss this aspect. Should photos taken from a place be posted to that place if they don’t show any of the place?

I’m not interested in discussing this particular photo, as much as the princip of sharing photos showing the views from a place. What do you think? And if you want to engage in such a discussion we should probably start a separate thread for this.

Cheers

To be honest this picture was first published to Panoramio and from there transferred to LG when Google sadly decided to discontinue that site. The rule in Panoramio (that published your pictures to Google Earth and Maps) was that one should place the picture on the spot you took it. Later on Google introduced POI’s on Panoramio that could be added to pictures to make clear what was seen on the picture.
This system made it possible to make some sort of animation of a place looking from all sides to the subject (POI).

The discussion is certainly interesting. As there are just few POI’s of interest some POI’s become a huge pile of pictures taken in a certain area that is in fact many square kilometres wide.

For instance Aekingerzand

But I think opinions will be very diverse. IMHO I rather see a nice picture published on the place than tons of really crappy pictures that show the POI.

Congratulations @MortenCopenhagen you have jumped onto the ladder at #3 position and thank you for following the rules so exceptionally well with regards to providing details about your “star” gourmet restaurant photo, and I must add, very interesting details. I have to say that I too am not particularly proud of my “star” photo :joy: but it is what it is! So yes I agree it’s a fun project during these COVID pandemic times but also interesting I mean, can we see any logical reason why some rather average photos get more views than our best or top quality photos?

As you will see that sadly I have lost top position :joy: but I did expect this to happen sooner or later. I’m hoping that I will not be knocked totally off the ladder but if I do, I have a plan waiting in the wind for this, stay tuned

ps: I am referring to review photos to distinguish from other “general” photos posted by LGs here on Connect and not necessarily on Maps Reviews, perhaps this is unnecessary!

Hello @Erik_van_den_Ham

Well you’ve taken top position with a photo having staggering 4,160,993 views. Well done you but in the process you’ve knocked moi down to second position and he is very, very :joy: about this lol. Thank you for providing such a detailed explanation about your photo pursuant to rule 2(b). This I believe helps us all to better understand and appreciate what your “star” is all about!

I see that like in the case of @MortenCopenhagen , @SilvyC , and myself, your “star” photo is not what you would consider your best photo but there you are, our “star” seems to be a people’s choice award and nothing to do with our personal choice or judgement! Maybe I’m wrong but it sure seems this way so far!

Hello my dear friend, @AdamGT

Great idea to get LGs involved in an assignment…

Congrats LG @Erik_van_den_Ham , you and friend @MortenCopenhagen …

Here are my humble contributions:

These are my other contributions.
However, I would like to make a comment here: I have covered a lot of rural areas (this did not benefit me for scoring views) while reaching 62,234 contributions, with 9,23,468 Review Views, 2,88,069 Contribution Points & 7,37,04,078 Photo views - I could not concentrate on my 360 Photos for the past one year - presently standing with 74.8 Million with 700 Photos.

Congratulations @SilvyC you’ve jumped onto the ladder at #4 position and once again it’s interesting how you have said that your “star” photo is not one of more beautiful photos that you uploaded. As you will see from the replies of others on this post, this seems to be the trend! Is it possible that this is not always the case? Perhaps someone will come up with a “star” that truly is an amazing photo and we’ll call it the “superstar” haha.

Hi @Tinoessoe and congratulations you have jumped onto the ladder at #6 position and thank you for following the rules by providing details about your “star”. There are two aspects of this post. Yes the number of views determines which step on the ladder you are but also of interest is what make your photo the top viewed photo, that is, your “star”! So thank you for participating and check your “star” every now and then and keep us up to date. Your position on the ladder, as mine, might change with future updates so do check back!

All the best and keep guiding!

Hello @TravellerG and where have you been hiding?
Thank for your impressive 2,221,250 “star” which will well and truly put you onto this post’s ladder but before I add it can you please tell us some details about your photo (see 2(b) in the original post).

Hi @AdamGT

For a picture to get many views there are many variables that contribute to it. Like how long it’s online, how popular is the place for people to visit it on maps, is it also shown at general place POI (to which you can’t upload pictures) in this case that could have been Groningen. (it isn’t at this time I checked).
I think the best condition for a picture to get many views is that it becomes the main (first) picture at a POI. All people visiting that POI will give it a ‘view’.
I must say that my picture hardly get’s any views anymore these last months what the reason is for that I can only guess.

Hello @TravellerG I wonder why is your view count differently noted as in general? I mean Your top viewed pictures shows 22,21,250 while with most others it would be shown as 2,221,250 is that the Indian way of noting a number?

Hi @Erik_van_den_Ham

Indian culture uses lakh and crore when describing large numbers.

One lakh is 10.000 and one Crore is 10.000.000 hence the commas in large Indian numbers seems wrongly positioned to others.

It takes a small effort to “see through” and spot the millions, but the numbering are not different - only the punctuation differs.

I hope this helps. If you want to learn more just Google lakhs and crores

Cheers
