It is raining here and after some rain we got bright sky, so I decided to go Mahesh to witness this year’s Ratha Yatra and took some photos.
Ratha-jatra – The term is derived from two Sanskrit words, Ratha which means chariot or carriage, and Jatrawhich means journey. @AdamGT
The Ratha Yatra of Mahesh is the second oldest chariot festival in India (after Ratha Yatra at Puri, which is the biggest one) and oldest in Bengal. During first day of Ratha Yatra People throng to have a share in pulling the long ropes attached to the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Balarama and Subhadra on the journey from the temple to Masir bari (a separate near by place) and back exactly after seven days.
Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos with us, the chariot looks amazing and the colors simply incredible!
Feel free to edit your post and add more details about this celebration. You can edit your publication following the helpful instructions that you will find here: Edit your post - Why and How To.
Are there any particular things and rituals that are done during this time of the year?
Thanks for your reply. As you said I have edited and added some additional inputs in my main post.
Every year a month long fair take place during Ratha Yatra but due to covid pandemic no fair will take place this year (except a small fair containing a few stalls) like previous year. Every year hundreds of people crowd to take part in pulling a long rope with this chariot and will take this (chariot) to a nearby place and after seven days the chariot will return to its original place. Then we called this tour 'Ulto Ratha yatra". In Bengali Ulto means opposite.
