Connect Moderators are Local Guides just like you and me. They apply the knowledge they’ve gained as active members of our community to moderate Connect and help improve the experience for everyone. You may see them welcoming newcomers, explaining the program, answering questions, and sharing their knowledge with others.

This month, we’re sharing some personal insights from one of our amazing Connect Moderators. Meet Shola ( @SholaIB ). Shola lives in Monrovia, Liberia, and speaks English, French, and Yoruba.

Name: Shola Ismaila Bello

Location: Monrovia, Liberia

What I love about being a Local Guide: Editing places and adding new places makes me feel like Christopher Columbus who discovered the Americas. I realize that I’m influencing my world positively. Being a Local Guide also helps me to discover new places as I walk around contributing to Maps. Since I joined the program, my communication and tech skills have improved. I enjoy the thrill of international interactions on Connect. I like attending and hosting meet-ups.

Why I’m a Connect Moderator: Being a Connect Moderator gives me more chances to interact. The Local Guides program is all about helping others and in the process I help myself, too. It’s not nice when you spend time writing a post and no one reads it, but as a Connect Moderator, I spend a lot of time on Connect reading posts, answering questions, and welcoming and guiding new members.

My favorite things to explore: I love to explore natural places, such as waterfalls, parks, beaches, and forests and historical places, such as museums.

My favorite type of contribution(s) to make on Google Maps: Adding new places and editing incorrect information. Above all, I love drawing roads; I have added 2203 roads and I’m proud of that.

Languages I read/Speak/write fluently: English, French, Yoruba. I understand a bit of Hausa and Igbo and I’m learning Spanish.

Places I’d like to visit: I’d love to visit East and Southern Africa. I’d love to visit Delhi and Mumbai in India; I love the colorful lifestyle there.

Fun facts about me: I’m a super friendly person. I make friends at the snap of a finger and pull the crowds easily. I interact easily and am a nature lover. I love to learn new languages and music.

You know we chat on the 3K TRAC Road channel that we use on a regular base but never had the opportunity to learn more.
