In honor of International Women’s Day today, we’re happy to recognize our Local Guides around the world who make a difference by empowering women on Google Maps.
Priyanka Upadhyay is one of the many inspiring Local Guides in the community who are passionate about putting women-owned businesses on Google Maps. She was originally inspired after visiting a market in India where 90% of the vendors are women. “It is very important for women to be independent in India because being financially independent makes them free from the opinions of others,” Priyanka explained. “Coming to this market and seeing these amazing women vendors made me want to help. That’s when I decided to start adding businesses run by women on Google Maps.”
After this experience at the market inspired her to add women-owned businesses to Google Maps, she later started organizing “Empowered Women Meet-ups” to encourage others to become involved and motivate them to contribute to the Map. “I wanted to inspire more people to add women-run businesses in their cities,” she said. “My ultimate goal is to inspire other women to follow their dreams.”
Here on Connect, she writes an Empowered Women series showcasing women who have faced adversity and now have their own businesses. This year, Priyanka is organizing 28 meet-ups in all 28 states of India. During the meet-ups, she will visit the capitals of each state, help women business owners improve their Google Maps place page, and connect with other Local Guides to help with this initiative.
