Introduction
As I mentioned in one of my Posts, Local Guides is a melting pot; a Melting Pot of different cultures, ideas, languages, teams and of course; people!
The Big Sallah
In Nigeria, we call the second Eid festival of the Muslims; The Big Sallah; where all Muslims who can afford it, kill a ram to commemorate God’s provision of a ram in replacement of Abraham’s willing sacrifice of his Son. We (especially the Yorubas of South-Western Nigeria) also call the festival "Ileya" which literally translates; 'it’s time to go home’, as most families travel to their hometowns to celebrate the festivals with their loved ones and as a huge family.
The Celebration in Nigeria
In Nigeria, the Government declares two days as Public Holiday. This year; 20th and 21st of July, 2021 Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.
How I spent the Holiday
So, who did I go to see? A Local Guide of course! My Sagir @Sagir
Arrival
I was welcomed to Sagir’s home by his beautiful wife; Hajia Adamu and Sagir.
The meal
As the ram is the traditional meal for the festival, I was served a platter; doughnut, Fried meat, **Dambu (**a kind of minced meat which is a special delicacy of those from Northern Nigeria where Sagir hails from), Juice. Water, Malt. Ah! What a feast. Dambu is also called Dambun, Danbu and is a kind of Meat Floss, you can find the recipes online. This is just the appetizer not the main meal
The Hospitality
After, Sagir introduced me to his delightful kids, we caught up immediately. Never have I met children so friendly! A true reflection of their Father. They made to quickly initiate me into the Cartoon they were watching; “Zig&Sharko”. Many of us don’t know but our Sagir himself is a big fan of animated series and he got himself his favorite series as a stuffed doll, please don’t tag him
It was difficult to tell who enjoyed the series more; Sagir or the kids as he will rush back in if he missed a scene and ask the Kids what happened while he was away. If you are on Telegram with Sagir, you must have come across this sticker.
Now, let’s talk Business!
While the *Kids (*My apologies to all who love animated series) watched ‘Zig&Sharko’, the Business people sat to talk. **Sagir’**s beautiful Wife; Hajia Adamu and I sat to discuss about her fabric and jewelry business as she showed me fabrics from Dubai and India as she explained her sourcing procedure and how she controlled logistics right from home!
We talked about the Dollar’s steady rise against the Naira and what it meant for us as Market *women (*women-in-Business) with Sagir occasionally tearing his eyes off the TV display to contribute to our discussions.
At the end of the day, it was time to go.
Local Guides Work - Review!
Is a Local Guide a LOCAL Guide if we do not Map?
I found this; LSDPC Mosque, as small as this place looks, it is a landmark within the Estate and even the Security officers at the gate use this in describing the blocks of flat within the estate.
Picture time
I think Sagir’s baby girl stole the show with her girly swag.
Appreciation
I enjoyed my first time out on A Sallah day.
Did I just become aware of Sallah? No.
Is Sagir the first Muslim I am knowing or meeting? No.
But something very strong and more likely, a common interest brought us together; Google Local Guides, so I traveled over 20km to spend the day with his family.
Thanks to Google LOCAL Guides for bringing us together. Cheers!
Thank you so much for hosting me @Sagir
So, How did you spend your Sallah holiday? Are there special feasts you observe or local names you call it? I will love to hear from you in the comments below
