Navigating in redesigned Connect in Mobile

Hello, Guides! This is my second post on Redesigned Connect. Almost 99% of my browsing and work takes place on my Android mobile, so much of what you see from me is based on the Android user experience. This article is again about navigating through comments and replies, which @MortenCopenhagen has already explained for desktop users. I’ve been experimenting with the little oval bar at the bottom left of my mobile screen.

If you remember, in the old Connect, a post would be followed by about 10 comments per page, and as comments increased, they moved onto page 2, and so on. Now, imagine there were 400 comments—you’d need to scroll through 40 slow pages to find specific replies, which would take at least 3-4 minutes if you didn’t use the search function.

However, in redesigned Connect, that’s all changed for mobile. Now, you just have a post followed by any number of comments—no pages, just a single list with a reply/comment count. Even with 1,000 comments, just a few taps let you reach any comment by number or date. The little bar at the bottom left does all the magic.

This function reminded me of a famous post by @WilfriedB around February 2024, a much-debated issue on views. That post garnered about 1.6k comments, and I remember seeing more than a hundred pages. You can imagine how long it would take to reach page 76, 96, or any other specific page back then.

This little oval bar serves multiple functions:

  • Right at the start, it shows the number of replies and comments. If it’s 1/1 it means there is the just post no comments and replies.

It tells you exactly where you are in the post— whether you’re in the middle, at the end, or the beginning.

When you tap it, it’s like getting wings—you can enter a specific number to jump right to that comment.

You can also reach comments by date.

When you tap the bar, a live scroller appears on the right side, letting you reach and stop at any point. You get a preview of the comments as you scroll without refreshing, and as soon as you lift your finger, the page updates to that location.

Using Jump to function:

If you put 0 or 1 you land at the main post. If you put any fractional number you stay unmoved. If you enter more than the number of comments you stay at the end of the page. The numbers you can enter in jump to huge idk 10^20 maybe :eyes:
When you enter a date
It goes to first comment made on that date.

Two more amazing features of the new Connect are, first, you get small highlights above comments if a guide is commenting for the first time or after a while. It’s a great way to encourage them to participate in more inclusive mapping.

Secondly, I noticed (though I’m not entirely sure) that when you see a post for the first time, a little blue dot appears as a reminder that it’s an unvisited post with unread comments.

Settings for Comments/Replies:

You get many settings like deleting as well as restoring/undo-ing but if you try these two quickly there is spamming filter kicks in which ask you to take a break and try again.

And you can always flag inappropriate comments/replies easily. Editing is handy too now unlike old connect where there were many restrictions.

Notifications in Mobile connect chrome apk

You get text indication for the already read comments Like this :point_down:t2:

How many of you find these features useful?

By the way, I use a lite Chrome APK for Connect; I don’t use the dedicated Chrome browser.

Thanks,
Trail_blazer

Hi @Trail_blazer

I don’t think Tip: Navigating topics with many replies is related to Desktop users only. I would be happy to accommodate mobile users better if you would suggest how.

Is using the the term Resigned on purpose. Did you mean Redesigned?

The oval navigation bar is also available on Desktop although not as advanced as on mobile.

On Desktop the url is continuously updated as you scroll over the replies. At the end of the url the current reply number is added so linking to one particular reply is amazingly easy.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Morten almost made me laugh. Actually I have the draft saved at multiple place and looks like somehow it got autocorrected :face_with_peeking_eye:
Anyways I have updated the article and spelling as well. thanks for the heads up.
The 2 replies icon you mentioned is only visible as a icon in mobile. I don’t think I can use the desktop right now and confirm it as I only have an ipad and android handy with me. The features in android mobile are pretty simple and advanced.

Hello dear friend @Trail_blazer , Thank you for sharing your insights on the New Connect. The tips are quite helpful. I have verified on an iOS Mobile and can confirm that the screenshots and functionality appear similar.

Thanks Prasad bro. Also try checking on desktop I guess it’s more or less same maybe few scrolling changes are there as mobile screens are smaller hence they have tried very novel approach here. Keeping main post or comment pinned while scrolling through other stuff.

Hello, dear @Trail_blazer bro, I have checked on the iMac desktop with the Chrome browser. I am sharing my experience, ‘Jump to’ is available but the search box function is not available on the desktop;

The following search function is available on the desktop as well.
