The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is held in the Punnamada Lake near Alappuzha, Kerala in India.
This competition is held on the second Saturday of August every year.
On the day of the boat race, the lakefront has about two lakh people including tourists for watching it.
For the people of each village in the area, a victory at this race for their village boat is something to be celebrated for months to come.
The most popular event of the race is the competition of Chundan Vallams or snake boats.
The official site of the boat race is:

@TusharSuradkar this absolutely beautiful and nice. Thank you for the detailed information too. Do you have to pay to gain access to watch especially as a stranger? Or its list open to everyone?

Thanks, @SholaIB
There are tickets of about 3000 and 2000 INR for the pavilions but I enjoyed the race from the comforts of the houseboat where I was vacationing on that day.
Moreover, the Kerala backwaters where the race is conducted is heavily populated along the banks, so people enjoy from the streets and from the roof-tops of their houses, but I think the culmination of the race is the finishing point which can be witnessed only from the stands, so buying a ticket seems to the only option if one wants to be part of the excitement.

That’s right @fasi6083 It is the most awaited and most popular sport in the region as most people who gather are fishermen or boat operators and it is a traditional sport for several centuries with high prestige attached to the event.

Yes, the Kerala backwaters are beautiful and the Kerala people are humble and energetic at the same time.
Entire villages and the streets are deserted since just about everyone flocks to prepare, conduct, participate, or watch the boat race.

@TusharSuradkar Thank You for adding this to Kerala #Worldchallenge. Boat races are really fun to watch aren’t they. In San Francisco there is something similar, ‘Dragon Boat races’, they used to be held in Treasure Island, in the bay near Bay bridge. Now it is moved to Oakland.
