Peanut Candy Home made (Recipe)

It’s high time I shared this with you all. Anyone like sweet things or enjoys a tasty dessert after a meal? Or better still something to amuse your taste buds when you are bored. Here is a home-made Peanut Candy. I made this in my own kitchen so you can trust it Lol.Mind you it’s really sweet and can be addictive as well. I think this is common to west African countries so its not just a Liberian thing. Nevertheless I see it more often on sale here in Monrovia the capital city of Liberia. Its popular, cheap and mostly home made. You can get one sweet chunk for as low as 2 cents(American cents). So it’s not expensive or luxurious to enjoy this tasty yummy delicacy.

ingredients/Recipe Peanut candy

  1. Sugar half cup
  2. Peanut roasted 1 cup
  3. Vegetable oil. A spoonful just for spreading and moulding
  4. N.B that the sugar and Peanut ratio could be increased or decreased as required for your own personal taste and consumption.

Process

Pour your sugar into a sauce pan and stir gently until it melts.Note that the sugar has to melt down well enough and maybe a little bit brown as well.

Pour in your roasted Peanut into the sugar and continue to stir until both are well mixed and sticky. It should also be stored in a nice jar after preparation and cooling off. It shouldn’t be left open. I have my jar here on the table. Lol.

Turn off the heat and Pour the candy mixture onto a well oiled plastic surface. The oil is very necessary as the candy is quite sticky and will be very hard or impossible to mould or take off without a well oiled surface.

To mould it you need the oil as well. Please make sure the candy is moulded into whatever shape you want before it cools off. Have you ever tasted this or is it also common in your part of the world? Please feel free to let us know in the comment box below. I would love to give you all a real taste of it,but it isn’t possible sorry. So here you go a virtual taste…hmmmm yummy!!!

That sounds delicious…! It sounds like a fun and easy snack to make. We make a similar type of Candy here in India. We call it Peanut Laddoo. The only difference is we use Jaggery instead of Sugar. The rest is the same. It’s my favourite one. It’s a great energy boost pack too. It would also be great to know if there are any other interesting recipes from Liberia or West Africa. Thanks, @SholaIB for sharing…!

Hello @Kumaarsantosh

Thank you for your very nice comment on this post. It’s interesting to know that you have the same sweet candy in India.

Somehow we have some similar things here as in India. Please what is Jagerry? Is it very different from sugar? How does it look like or how is it made? @Rohan10 also mentioned the same thing so I will like to know what Jaggery is. Thank

Jaggery is a type of unrefined sugar or sweetener popular in India and other parts of Asia. It’s made from concentrated sugar cane juice that is boiled and then shaped into blocks or ground into granules. Its distinct color is due to the iron content in the sugar cane juice. It has a strong distinctive taste, often described as being smoky or caramel-like. While it can be used as a substitute for sugar, Jaggery is higher in nutrients and has a stronger flavor. Hope this helps @SholaIB .

Hello @SholaIB ,

Jaggery is basically unrefined sugar extracted from Cane or Palm juice. Both taste different and have unique flavour. Jaggery is full of vitamins and hence preferred more over Sugar for health reasons.

In the Ayurveda Jaggery is considered to be as a cure for a lot of health problems. This is very good for maintaining the digestive system healthy and increasing the immunity of the body.

Use of Jaggery or Jaggery based food items in winter is very good for health.

I have tried to capture three varieties of Jaggery in the photos in this post as were readily available in my home. Their captions explain about the pictures.

Photo1: Group of blocks of Light brown Jaggery made up of brown sugar

Photo2: Dark brown block of Jaggery made

up of Palm

Photo3: Crushed Jaggery called Jaggery Powder

Hope you find this reply useful.

JAI HO!!!

Hey @Kumaarsantosh

This is opening a very new area of discussion now talking about Jagerry!!! I am quite interested in it really. Can it be used in tea ? Can it be used in place of sugar in coffee and other purposes?

It’s interesting the health benefits of Jaggery aa well. This is my first time hearing about it. I wish we had it out here.

Thank you for sharing the photos here…That’s very kind of you.

Yes indeed @SholaIB .

We use this in tea and the tea is called Gud wali chai (Jaggery based Tea). Such Tea is full of Vitamins, Magnesium and Iron.

There is a different method to make such tea. We can discuss.

Thanks!

Jaggery, a traditional sweetener in India, particularly in rural India, adds a unique and rich flavor to various desserts. There are some sweets which are made using jaggery only. It’s also used in preparation of some curries. Some elderly rural people refuse to accept sugar instead of jaggery in recipes.Interestingly, they staunchly hold onto jaggery in traditional recipes, asserting that the taste is compromised when sugar takes its place. Jaggery is also used in tea instead of sugar. The item in photo is home made.

popular ones in Andhra Pradesh state, India:Bobbatlu, Bellam Pongali, Ariselu, Paramannam
