Photo Tips - Megapixel & Megabytes - TravellerG

How to explain “Megapixel (Photos Size) & Megabyte (Storage Size).

The Truth:

There is no connection with Camera Image SIZE (Megapixels) & Photo storage Memory SIZE (Megabyte)….

Dear, my friends…

I just reached back to my Villa, in Yercaud (Tamil Nadu, India) and was enjoying the cool breeze in our small garden.

My mobile rang… I attended – the other end: Sir, could you spare few minutes? The question was: How to explain “Megapixel & Megabyte”.

[Note: Many of you may know this deeply; this is for others, who have doubts].

I just told, let me send you few photos with little brief… Pl see it in detail, I think, that will answer your questions? Please try… I shall explain it in detail, after few hours.

I just took the following photos of a lucky Rose {lucky, because the Rose could meet you all} with 2 Cameras & 1 Mobile – kindly try to analyse… It is very interesting:

Firstly, for your information:

  1. Sony 7R M2 has 7952 x 5304 Pixels = 42.2 Mega Pixels (One of the highest)

  2. Sony RX 10 has 4864 x 3548 Pixels = 17.7 Mega Pixels

  3. Samsung S9+ has 4032 x 3024 Pixels = 12.2 Mega Pixels… OK?

  4. Original taken in 7R M2, a single photo is 15.5 MB (Megabytes) of size, stored in the Card, with the JPEG QUALITY at 100%.

  5. When the JPEG quality of the photo was reduced to 75% (just for studying), the storage showed only just 1.1 MB (Megabytes) - BUT BOTH Photos WITH 7952 x 5304 Pixels (42.2 Mega Pixels).

Picture taken in 7R M2 & published at 75% JPEG Quality

  1. Original taken in RX 10, is 8.0 MB (Megabytes) of size, stored in the Card, with the JPEG QUALITY at 100%
  2. When the JPEG quality of the photo was reduced to 75% (just for studying), the storage showed only just 781 KB (Kilobytes). BUT BOTH Photos WITH 4864 x 3548 Pixels (17.7 Mega Pixels).

Picture taken in RX 10 & published at 75% JPEG Quality

=========================================

To compare, I am giving the Original with 100% JPEG Quality, Original with 90% & 75% JPEG Quality. BUT, ALL the 3 Photos WITH 4032 x 3024 Pixels = (12.2 Mega Pixels). But notice the file sizes…!!!

Storage size:

  • Original, with JPEG quality @ 100% = 3.15 MB (Samsung S9 Plus)

  • JPEG Quality at 90% = 1.6 MB (Samsung S9 Plus)

  • JPEG Quality at 75% = 826 KB (Samsung S9 Plus)

======

I don’t think, that there is any major change, visually… Am I right? (but, then… there is…Details in the next post)

Hope many of you could imagine few concepts…. Is it Not? Why can’t you post your ideas? Please…

Dear friends, @DeniGu @FelipePK @VasT @sonnyNg @JavieraAu @JohnPeter @Saravanakanth @NandKK @Lambertwinston - could you try, when time permits?

(Sorry, if I am troubling anyone… If time does not permit… do not bother…)

We will see the details, in few hours, in the next post.

Thanks.

Thanks for this information @TravellerG !

This is very helpful. I was just wondering the other day, if it’s possible to take high quality images on my iPhone X? Would you recommend bigger sizes in order to be able to Photoshop if needed? Thanks a lot for your tutorials.

Hi @TravellerG ,

Thank you for sharing this useful information and these photos with us!

I have such photos and I will share with you. What do you think about them? Are they good and should I improve something? I didn’t use special effects.

Dear @DanniS

From Next 2 posts it will be more clear.

I will answer your question simply like this:

You can definitely take high quality photos in iPhone X.

Higher PIXEL Density Photos will result in photos with more DETAILS.

Then You have more flexibility to edit

Thanks a lot @TravellerG for the tips and advice. I think it helps a lot to know how to take good photos. I know phone camera doesn’t compare to professional ones, but at least to be able to make better photos is great.

Hi @TravellerG,

Thanks for the educational post.

It is quite handy, as when having the image uploaded on different platforms, it may require reducing the storage size of the photo itself.

With the normal glance through the photo examples you have provided, an inexperienced eye may have trouble noticing the difference.

Hey @TravellerG ,

Thanks again to tag me, I was checking your tips on my phone (I use iPhone X). Unfortunately it doesn’t give me the option to change the quality of the photos =/ so I can’t do the tests to see it.

Visually seeing the photo I honest can’t see any differences between them but it’s remarkable how the storage size reduced which is great.

Hi @TravellerG ,

Thank you very much!

I took these photos with my camera Panasonic Lumix with lens for portrait. It was after raining and that’s why it’s so full of life.

There is a difference between the previous photos and this photo that I took with my phone Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus:

Dear friend, @FelipePK

Sorry, I was not clear in my explanation (I will note care of this in future) - it not your mistake, please.

What you did is correct - Only some cameras allow you to change the the RESOLUTION. OK? Don’t worry.

Let me simplify it:

Aim:

  1. Keep the PIXEL SIZE or the PHOTO SIZE ie Length x Width = same, Eg: Samsung S9 Plus has 4032 x 2034
  2. But, we want to reduce the File Size, in MB to KB… OK?

Here, we reduce the JPEG QUALITY & not the Resizing in Megapixel.

I have used Irfan View, free software to reduce the file size bt "Re-Saving the original file, reduced to 90% or, 80% or 75 % etc.

You can use many other software, to reduce the QUALITY of JPEG Files, while saving the picture.

Hope, you will do it …

Thanks

Great post @TravellerG sir, wonderfully explained the difference between these two.

Also the photos are really beautiful.

By the way, we are not able to see the second photo (Picture taken in RX 10 & published at 75% JPEG Quality)
