During my childhood, most hawker sell their products using rancatan, Sundanese word for bamboo carrying pole.
Kerosene, fish i n live condition, flowers with pots, terracota buckets, fire woods, rice crackers.
From light weight like rice crackers, to big flowers pots with more than a hundred kilograms use rancatan and walk from one kampoong to another kampong with load and clear shout out their product.
Rancatan made of good quality and thick bamboo. Rigid but Flexible too
Width around 8 centimetres.
Thickness about two or three centimetres.
Length is very customize depen on :
length from Left hip, sholder and righ hip of the hawker
diameter of the two bucket or each bucket because some hawker shoul bring different bucket in each side.
enough space when the hawker move the position from front-rear position to left-right position
Rancatan than handle heavy weight have two layer bamboo, tighten by wrapped by rattan rope. both bamboo skin is the outer side, not in the same direction but the oposite, the second bamboo is shorter than the first one.
How can a hawker can handle more than a hundred kilograms and walk more than ten kilometers without exhausted, here is the secret.
Before take a step for walk ensure that the rancatan have balancing the weight, by slide the center point of the weight, you can feel it and see it balance or not.
Move slowly the rancatan up and down, so some split second you can feel that gravity force is not working do the spring effect of the rancatan, like a dive swimer do with their springboard before dive to the water.
Once the hawker get the rythm of spring effect of the rancatan he drive the rancatan forward a litle bit and step forward.
Once the gravity force is arise he already at the stand still position to receive the weght.
Push litle bit upward and take the next step.
Once he got the harmony and the rhythm, He can walk a little faster.
He get the walk rhythm, so he can change to the brisk walk.
Thank you very much, that what I mean with my post.
The first photo I love it all the materials are from bamboo.
Live the base of the basket, bamboo strap it make the basket more rigid.
The second photo is the hawker put the front basket 45 degree aside so the back and forth movement from the front basket is not distubring his leg leareance when he walk.
See how rancatan can be adapted with additional plastic basket.

awesome.
In the first picture I saw that all of the vegetables hawker pull down their carrying pole.
In the second picture the hawker slide the baskets and collect it in the center of the carrying pole so when he give services to the customer selling his vegetables he can reach it easily.
