Recap: [Virtual] India, November 30, Discovering new Connect with Trail_blazer and PrasadVR

Hello everyone,

This is a summary of the virtual meetup organized by me, Trail_blazer, and Prasad VR on Saturday, November 30, 2024. The event took place on the Meet app at 11:00 AM IST (5:30 AM UTC). The meetup was open for RSVPs, and initially, around five participants showed interest, with several comments supporting the event. However, we are thrilled to share that the actual attendance exceeded our expectations by almost 200%.

As this was my first time hosting a meetup, I’m happy to report that everything went smoothly and as planned, finishing on time.

Meetup Highlights

Our primary focus was to explore the redesigned Google Connect platform, diving into some of its most-used features and functions.

Introduction:
Prasad VR began the session with a warm welcome note, followed by brief introductions and greetings. We then transitioned into a discussion guided by a 20-slide presentation. Despite the slide count, we ensured it was an interactive session, encouraging everyone to provide feedback and share inputs on various features.

Key Features Discussed:

1. Dark Theme/Mode:
While not a native feature of the redesigned Connect, we highlighted how users can enable a dark theme through Chrome’s experimental flag settings. The feature generated significant interest, and attendees were encouraged to post queries if they needed further assistance.

2. Profile Settings:
We explored ways to feature favorite posts on profiles, add locations, and make Google Maps profiles public.

3. Notification Settings:
The focus here was on customizing notifications, especially for saved searches and tracking updates.

4. Drafts and Private Messages:
We discussed using the draft feature to manage unfinished post replies efficiently. Additionally, we touched on private message views, likes, bookmarks, and unread features.

5. Search Functions:
This was the most detailed segment, covering:

Using hashtags to categorize content.

Viewing the status of comments/posts using the colon ( : ) function.

Exploring moderator profiles and understanding Connect’s hierarchy.

6. Additional Features:

Polls: Briefly discussed their applicability.

Jump and Scroller Functions: Touched upon, as a detailed post about these already exists.

Feedback and Participation:
The attendees showed great enthusiasm, especially about the mobile version of the new Connect app. The interactive discussions made it clear that users are eager to explore and adapt to the redesigned platform.

Closing Note

This meetup reinforced the importance of understanding tools and features to improve user experience and assist others effectively.

I want to extend my gratitude to @LightRich for encouraging us and a special thanks to my co-host, @PrasadVR , for managing the technical aspects.

Stay tuned for future meetups and updates!
Happy Mapping,
Trail_blazer

Thank you everyone for you patience. I have posted the crux of this meet-up in case someone missed the meet-up you can go through the highlights. It was difficult to cover everything in detail though we did touch everything and finished within stipulated time. Next time onwards I will try meet-ups a bit more inclusive and precise.
