ROCK YOUR SOCKS!

Today, in Sweden, we are rocking our socks – why?

By wearing different socks, we celebrate differences and strike a blow to all people’s equal worth and rights. The UN has announced March 21st as the World Day for Down’s Syndrome and this is due to the fact that a person with Down’s syndrome has three copies of chromosome number 21, instead of two. The syndrome is not a sickness and it is named after a British, 19th century, physician John Langdon Down (1828-1896) best known for his work with disabled children.

Thousands of people honor Down’s Syndrome Day by taking pictures of their socks. You can find them on Twitter and Instagram under the hashtag #rockasockorna and even celebrities, such as football players, politicians, and artists, show their commitment to everyone’s differences and equal values by rocking their socks.

Together, we can change people’s attitudes and make sure that everyone is welcome in our society!

A great cause and an excellent way of displaying it too! Even LGs who have received Local Guides socks can make those a part of the action . Great post, @Linnea - thanks for sharing this!

That’s so awesome @Linnea

I will wear different socks today as well for this wonderful cause. In Australia we celebrate Harmony Day on 21 March. Everyone at various schools and work organizations wear orange coloured clothing and make multicultural food to share for lunch. Harmony Day coincides with the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The ongoing theme of Harmony Day is ‘everyone belongs’. Harmony Day is a day of cultural respect for all.
