In Google maps I love sharing knowledge about small businesses or places I feel are being overlooked. When I lived in Philadelphia 2 years ago I discovered this restaurant named “South Philly Barbacoa” a restaurant that sells Barbacoa, a Mexican dish really hard to cook. The Barbacoa there was great, I wrote a review about it mentioning how good the barbacoa was and the authentic flavor it had. I also talked about it to all my friends so they could visit and taste the barbacoa.

Here in Playa del Carmen, where I live now, I discovered a little business named “Lechon y Cochinita Estilo Valladolid”, the place was not on Google Maps, so I added it. I felt I have to add it, not only because it was good, but because it is a way to help the owners and workers of a small business. Sometimes the owners of small businesses do not have the budget to advertise themselves. Google maps is an excellent tool to advertise, and literally put a business on the map. Some people do not know how to put their businesses in Google, so here is where local guides contribute and offer some little help. I later showed the owner of “Cochinita y Lechon Estilo Valladolid” his business on Google Maps. He was so happy, and said the most honest “thank you” I have heard. To me those kind of moments are the ones I am looking to create when I write, share a picture or simply rate a place as a local guide.
