Yesterday, on 18th of may 2019 the Buddhists all around the world celebrated the Vesak Poya day in celebration of the birth of prince Siddhartha , being the gauthama lord buddha, and the death of the Lord buddha.
In sri Lanka this year, the celebrations became completely different, because of the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks.
On every vesak poya day , as a habit Sri Lankans organize food Giveaways ( දන්සල්) around the Buddhist temples and around allmost all-over the country for the worshippers. These giveaways are held not only by the Buddhists. The Tamils, Muslims, Catholics and Christians are also helding those. Its not bounded only within Buddhists.So Because of the terrorist attacks , its hard to find those giveaways on this year vesak day.
Another thing that the Sri Lankan people do for the celebration of vesak poya day is the making of vesak lanters. They are constructed by using bamboo which are split into thin sticks. On this year vesak poya day we can see thousands of lanterns on everywhere.
The most important thing that i came across on this year vesak day is The celebrations are widely spread on the village areas unlike the previous years. As i reported the city of Colombo has been so much less populated on the vesak day.It means people on towns has visited the rural areas.
