Walter the Orphan Donkey of Mining Town Oatman Arizona

Walter the Orphan donkey is a local hero who lives in the Oatman, a mining town not very far from the sin city of Las Vegas.

Walter’s mother’s name was ‘Nadine the Donkey’ and she abandoned little Walter at the age of 4 months.

The exact birthdate is 07/05/2019 which should be read as 5th July as per the US system.

Walter is no ordinary Donkey and is called a Burro in Oatman. He is kind of a big deal having more than 14,000 followers on Facebook.

There is also a dedicated website for Walter.

Local shops also sell a book written on Walter the Burro and T-shirts with a picture of Walter are on sale.

Oatman is charming mining town with wooden sidewalks and facades straight out of the early twentieth century.

The home of Walter is not added yet on Google Maps, so I had to take directions from the locals to find it.

[Update]: My addition to Google Maps about the place where Walter lives was accepted within minutes of posting

Photos are not uploaded yet.

The nearest landmark is the Convict’s Gift Shop, not very far from Oatman jail.

Over the years, the population of donkeys in Oatman grew.

I found them all over the place, crossing the road, sometimes stopping traffic, and entertaining tourists like me.

Many shops in Oatman sell Burro food and their favorite are carrots.

As a result, many donkeys are found seeking food from passerby vehicles.

How to Reach

There are many day tours from Las Vegas to reach Oatman and the tour also covers the historic Seligman town.

Where to Stay

There are not many large places to stay since most tourists spend only a few hours here.

A notable hotel is the Oatman Hotel, Bar and Restaurant.

Accessibility

The Walter’s home is not accessible since the approach road is in bad condition and can pose a challenge to walk for even those who are not differently abled.

Wunderschöne Geschichte mit hervorragenden Bildern. Mich hat es beruhigt, dass dieser Esel Gesellschaft hat und nicht alleine dort leben muss.

@TusharSuradkar Looks like I jumped the gun on asking about your donkey experiences :joy: . Thank you for shining some light on places in our beautiful state, and thank you for bringing awareness to Walter. Per Arizona law, Nadine the Donkey can have her drivers’ license suspended until her back child donkey-support has been paid. Last we heard, she ran off with a retired Grand Canyon pack-mule from Laughlin.
