When it comes to naming businesses on Google Maps, it’s important to follow the actual name of the business. We’ll discuss a few best practices and examples for properly doing so below.

For example, some Local Guides might think that it would be helpful to include indicators like “CLOSED” in the title so it’s more prominent. That is not a best practice based on our guidelines. If you want to mark something as closed, you should report the place permanently closed instead of editing to change the name.

Similarly, franchises should always follow the proper franchise names and not include the name of the city or area in the actual name on Google Maps. As an example, the correct way to format Blue Bottle in Brooklyn would be “Blue Bottle” and not “Blue Bottle Brooklyn.”

Were you already aware of these best practices? Do you have any tips like this for your fellow Local Guides? Let us know in the comments below.
