Meet our 2020 Guiding Stars

Many things changed in 2020, but one thing has remained the same: the passion and dedication of the Local Guides community. Local Guides were instrumental in helping others through their contributions on Google Maps and beyond. To close out the year, we want to take a moment to celebrate and thank the community by shining a light on some of its many stars.

Sunyi House of Coffee and Hope

Recommended by Deliana, one of our Helpful Hero honorees, Sunyi House of Coffee and Hope in Indonesia lives up to its name. The cafe's menu boasts an impressive selection of coffee, but the business itself does so much more, making it a place that Deliana is happy to support on Google Maps and off. "This cafe is an extraordinary coffee shop that employs disabled people," she told us. "They're not only a business, but also a company dedicated to offer solutions for those with disabilities, providing ideas, education, and job opportunities." The owner has even participated in Local Guides meet-ups about accessibility.

Pâtisserie Obsession Inc.

Pâtisserie Obsession is a pastry shop in Canada loved by Local Guides including one of our Inclusive Mapper honorees, Cory. She is passionate about supporting this bakery because the owners have gone above and beyond for their community this year. "Even before the pandemic, they found ways to give back to the community," Cory told us. "They collect donations for a women's shelter, often drop off baked goods to locals in need, and treat their customers like family. They have done a lot to help those in need through this tough time.

Peninsula Camera Centre

Peninsula Camera Centre in Australia is a favorite local business of Creative Contributor honoree Paul. "It's run by community-focused people who will go out of their way to help someone learn how to use their camera. They have affordable repair facilities and carry a big range of well-priced second hand equipment, as well as new gear," Paul told us. "They treat each customer equally well, no matter if they're spending $20 or thousands. They take the time to explain everything and help people." He said they have many regulars who are repeat customers due to the excellent level of service provided, regardless of the amount spent there.

Rising Cafe

Rising Cafe, located in the United Kingdom, is highly recommended by Community Builder honoree Peter. Beyond its cozy atmosphere and delicious food, the owner of the cafe focuses on helping others and making their community a better place. "It's a wonderful cafe with an incredibly welcoming staff who go out of their way to help (even if you're pushing grandchildren in a buggy)," Peter told us. "The food is wholesome and heart warming. But even more than that, I love this place because of the owner's charitable actions. The employees are all people with past difficulties like alcohol abuse, and drug addiction who are on the road to rehabilitation. The cafe is their route back into society and employment. It's a brilliant concept and a brilliant place."

Home African Kitchen

Home African Kitchen was featured in Local Business Supporter honoree Alpha's African-Owned Businesses in Mağusa, a Google Maps list of restaurants, bakeries, salons, and other businesses that are African-owned and located in his community of Famagusta, Cyprus. "It's Nigerian-owned and located inside the Eastern Mediteranean University campus," he said. "They make excellent swallow. They offer no-contact delivery and are available on some the most famous food apps," he said. Not only is this restaurant African-owned, but it is also a safe space for all regardless of identity. It is labeled as both LGBTQ-friendly and women-led on Google Maps.
