Emeka U.

Level 10 • Lagos, Nigeria

Emeka is a leader in the Local Guides community who is passionate about accessibility. "As a Local Guide, I help individuals to find things and places, while helping businesses have an online presence," he said. "Most importantly, I am a Local Guide because I want people with disabilities to find accessible public spaces using Google Maps."

He launched the One Accessibility campaign, writing posts and reviews and hosting meet-ups to encourage others to include accessibility information on Google Maps. "Our core team of Local Guides based in Argentina, Australia, Nigeria, Pakistan and the United Kingdom is awesome. We also have more than 20 volunteers from six continents helping to add accessibility data to Google Maps while advocating for barrier-free spaces in their cities."

This year, Emeka continued to educate others on the importance of helpful contributions on the Map. "For the first time, I stood before 300 undergraduates to show them how Google Maps works and how it can be employed for environmental field work. Teaching students these skills and having them develop interest in Local Guides was fulfilling."

Though 2020 has had its challenges, there have also been positives for Emeka. "I have been able to write more about accessibility and disability issues under our weekly series 'Accessibility Uncovered' on Connect," he said, adding that "the one achievement I am really proud of is the virtual interview with Joe Devon, the founder of Global Accessibility Awareness Day," which helped Local Guides learn about #GAAD and technicalities around accessibility features. "Ordinarily it wouldn't have been easy to get him to speak at our event, but digital platforms are making this possible."
