Peter Williams found the Local Guides community after retiring. "I wanted to fill my time with something useful to the wider community that would also keep me interested and allow me to meet interesting local people and people worldwide," he told us. "Local Guides does just that."

A longtime fan of maps, both the digital and the paper variety, Peter truly cares about ensuring that information is as helpful as possible on Google Maps, especially in 2020 as many things have changed.

"I have always loved maps (from the days before most Local Guides were born, haha) and used to pore over paper maps," he said. When he was about 12 years old, in the 1960s, he even helped the publishers of one national paper map correct an error when he wrote a letter to the map editors. "The next edition had the correction," he told us. "I was thrilled to have been part of keeping national mapping accurate. Local Guides is just a continuation of the process of loving maps," he said. "I love Google Maps, and I am thrilled to be able to help others by updating the Map with information about localities and establishments."

Peter is also extremely passionate about the community aspect of the Local Guides program. He has organized several meet-ups for Local Guides to share ideas and knowledge, help one another understand the program and contribute better, and also build up a national and international friendship group. He also supports his fellow Local Guides and has attended more than two dozen meet-ups in addition to hosting his own.
