Introduction:

As Local Guides, it's often amazing which of all of our many photos we contribute to Google Maps has the most views.  We've come to call this our star photo and this post is all about such stars.  It includes a set of leaderboards that, as well as showcasing the star photos of hundreds of Local Guides from all over the world, presents a very detailed analysis of their performance.  We all have a star photo, so you can join in to showcase yours and it's simple to do. Just hit this link and register or if you want some help then add a comment in this post and someone will jump in to help you.

So what can you learn from the Star Photos Leaderboards?

Well from the very detailed analysis of the star photos of the hundreds of participating Local Guides from all over the world, you can learn a lot about what type of places and what type of photos seem to get the most views on Google Maps and remember, views are important as they provide a fairly good indication on how helpful your photos are to Maps users.

The Cover Image:

The cover image is a screenshot taken from the Street View of Mundart, a restaurant situated in the picturesque village of Oberammergau, Germany. it's a charming restaurant known for its cozy ambiance and traditional Bavarian cuisine and lookin at the Maps reviews and photos, it looks like a place where one can enjoy a taste of Bavaria while surrounded by the stunning landscapes of the German Alps. But why might you well ask have I chosen this as the cover image for the April star photo leaderboards post? Read on.

Readme - How to Read the Star Photos leaderboards (April 2024)

Briefly, this is what you need to know about the leaderboards in this post. For more details see the leaderboard documentation and the Leaderboard System's online context-sensitive help information.

1. The leaderboards in this post present details about the star photos of hundreds of participating Local Guides from all over the world.  We all have a star photo, it's our photo that has the most views and we call these, the star views.
2. As well as an overall leaderboard, you will see leaderboards for different Local Guide levels which provide you with direct comparisons of your star photo's views performance with that of your peers. Finally, there's a leaderboard ranking the top 100 star photos by average star views per day which gives an indication on how good your star photo is. To be included in this leaderboard, you must have updated your star photo's views in the period since the date of the last average star views per day leaderboard as posted here on Connect last month.
3. The average star views per day is calculated by dividing the star views by the life of the star photo expressed in days. The life of the star photo is equal to the number of days between when you first uploaded your star photo on Maps and the date that you last updated the star views and thus, will be different for each participating Local Guide. Therefore, for accuracy of the information it is important you enter the correct dates. When it comes to the date that you last updated the star views, point #2 above is very important.
4. As well as the star views and the date uploaded onto Maps, each listing on the leaderboards shows the Maps Category, and a description (e.g. Storefront, Building or Park) of the respective Local Guide's star photo.
5. Hovering over any star photo's Uploaded Date will display that star's screenshot date.
6. If the Maps Category of a star photo is shown as a link and if the name of the relevant Place of Interest was provided by the respective Local Guide, then hovering over that link will show you the name of the place and selecting that link will take you to a screenshot with details of that place as stored on the Local Guides, 2024 Star Photos post, a "photo album" if you will, of star photos.
7. If the Maps Category of a star photo is shown on a colored background then that star photo has been selected as one of the best that meets the formatting requirements as specified in the Local Guides, 2024 Star Photos post. Select that star photo's category and see why it has been rated as one of the best and read more about that star photo on the "photo album" post.
8. Preceding some of the leaderboards, you may see a number of featured star photos. If so, these are a selection from those that best meet the requirements as detailed in the Local Guides, 2024 Star Photos post.
9. Where shown, [ ] around leaderboard sequence numbers indicate that this is the first time that the Local Guide has participated on the Top 100 Local Guides leaderboards.
10. Where shown, ( ) around leaderboard sequence numbers indicate that this Local Guide levelled up/down onto this leaderboard.
11. An asterisk (*) shown after a Connect Username indicates that that Local Guide is a Connect Moderator.
12. Double asterisks (**) shown after a Connect Username indicates that that Local Guide is a Googler.
13. Hovering over a Local Guide's username will display the integration number that integrates that Local Guide's details on the Leaderboards System and Connect; the umbilical chord if you will between the two disparate systems.
14. Selecting a Connect Username will take you to that Local Guide's Connect Profile.
15. A superscript following a Local Guide's username and the star views value shown on a background color indicates that some of that Local Guide's data has been set to private. The Leaderboards System uses 8 different superscripts to indicate the varying states of a Local Guide's profile however only 3 superscripts will likely ever be shown on the Leaderboards. In all the remaining 5 cases the Local Guides have been deleted from participation. On the Star Photo Views Leaderboards you will only ever see the following superscripts used:
    [1] indicates that the number of photos and photo views values are private. 
    [3] indicates that both the number of photos and photo views values and the number of reviews and ratings values are private.
16. A ? or the words "Not set" in a cell indicates that the respective value cannot be determined or hasn't been provided by or for the respective Local Guide.

Featured Star Photo (April 2024)

This month Lucy's choice for the feature photo is the above very interesting photo taken by @GigiR. It's a night time storefront shot of the Mundart restaurant, the subject of the cover image of this post. Given its feature selection, I decided do some digging starting by reading some of the 370 reviews and looking through all the photos added on Maps for the restaurant. 

I discovered that there are a small number of internal and external shots of the restaurant, among a plethora of great photos of well presented food and together with @GigiR's photo, there are one or two other night shots. However, by far most were of the food. I thought that the cover photo on the Maps listing is a rather ordinary internal photo added by the business.  Because of this I'd say that in terms of views, it's hard for GigiR's photo to compete.

The other difficulty here I think is that unlike say @SvenJacobs star photo of Grand Central Terminal in New York City, NY which on last count had 218 million+ views, and depending on the timeframe, the terminal sees between 750,000 and 1 million visitors daily, with an additional 21.6 million tourists visiting annually, the village of Oberammergau, is a small town having a population of approximately only 5,500! 

However, interestingly, since 1634 Oberammergau has staged a Passion Play that now attracts some 420,000 to 530,000. The Passion Play is a dramatic re-enactment of the trial, suffering, and death of Jesus Christ. It typically includes scenes from the Last Supper, the betrayal by Judas Iscariot, the crucifixion, and the resurrection. The play originated in medieval Europe and has been performed in various forms for centuries, often as part of religious observances, particularly during the Easter season. This could certainly be a time when Gigi's photo would get a boost in views however, while the Oberammergau Passion Play attracts visitors hundreds of thousands from around the world who come to witness this unique cultural and religious event, it is only staged every ten years and the next one is in 2030! Let's wait and see hey!

This month @Svivek397 joins us on the Star Photos Leaderboards.

Once again with the recent Google Maps media issues, it will be interesting to hear about whether star photo have or have not.

Yet gain, formatting of star photos screenshot postings on the 2024 Star Photo Album continues to be a problem! Many are simply not following the Steps to add your star photo detailed in Section 3 of the Album.  Some are close but many are far from it 😱
